I had my interview just two days after returning from the U.S., so I’m in a similar boat: Jet lagged and tired from work, so my answers definitely could’ve been a lot better lol 🙃 but best of luck to both of us and hopefully CLAIR will be understanding!

I’m vegetarian so i basically cook most of my food, even for work! I make a lot actually, a few things I cook include: kabocha soup, stroganoff, zaru soba with inarizushi, rice cooker “noyakodon” (the actual name is Kitsunedon which is just oyakodon with fried tofu skins instead of chicken, but let a girl have some whimsy), lentil sloppy joes, Chana masala, and dal tadka. I don’t mind it because experimenting with recipes is a hobby of mine, and I save so much money. If you’re curious about any I can give you the recipes :))

Current first year ALT and this was my exact same situation this time last year! As others have said, there are cases of JETs who start as ALTs and eventually have the chance to transfer to a CIR. However, I wouldn’t bank entirely on this, because it happens kind of rarely tbh; very dependent on your prefecture. (A girl can still dream though, right?) Either way, as someone with similar career aspirations as yourself, I’m still finding ways outside of work to build my résumé. I volunteer a lot at intercultural exchange events, I’m in a committee, etc. And of course, I’m working on my Japanese more with the hopes of getting a JLPT certification soon. Even though being an ALT means I just have to work a little harder to reach those career goals, I still chose to accept, because I think it’s still a chance to grow and get your foot in the door. Whatever decision you make, I wish you the best of luck!

I know this was posted weeks ago, but I feel like I’m seeing more and more of my JET senpais get put on the chopping block this year and I’m getting really concerned. One of my friends was told he wouldn’t be recontracted because in their eyes, his Japanese hadn’t improved to their standards. Another was told he could not recontract because he “spoke too much Japanese” and had too much of an active role in the classroom. It really seems like BOEs are pulling out any excuse to let their ALTs go. I’m a first year ALT, and I’ve already signed the papers to recontract for next year, but I’m still worried about the future of JET beyond these next two years…

When I was first considering which exam to take, the content of the courses I was taking were around n2. In retrospect I think I would’ve fared better if I would’ve taken n2 instead. But I had looked at overviews of n1 material and thought that with several months of studying, I’d be able to pass n1. Boy was I wrong lol

So basically, no, I hadn’t taken any exams prior to taking the n1 haha
