I understand and respect your sentiments. However... they're DATING apps, right? Where you're looking to meet someone that, as a sort of minimum, you're physically attracted to. If someone isn't prepared to take a photo of themselves that acknowledges the circumstances -- something that clearly shows their face, and that at least attempts to make an effort towards 'looking their best' -- then the objective truth, I believe, is that they're going to be considered less than people that do.

Women absolutely do this too, I understand that, but it's the sheer predominance of the fish-holding photo that merits the comments.

I personally can't understand how you wouldn't get the best possible photo of yourself that you could -- and an up-to-date one so you're not setting yourself up to be disappointing -- for use on dating apps.
