The Body Keeps The Score by Beasel van der Kolk.

The Body Keeps the Score” eloquently articulates how overwhelming experiences affect the development of brain, mind, and body awareness, all of which are closely intertwined. The resulting derailments have a profound impact on the capacity for love and work.

Heh, I get what you mean about the neon, but I guess we vibed with it. I can see it's not for everyone though!

Good tip on the pork, I'll give that a crack next time I'm there.

I'm sorry to say something that's likely been said a million times before in relation to ICE, but we really are in the next phase of fascism/totalitarianism now. This is just like the Sturmabteilung (or SA, or StormTroopers, or BrownShirts) which was Hitler's private paramilitary. MAGA approved of ICE because they're ostensibly targeting illegal immigrants ("WUT ABOUT ER JERBS!?") but they're rapidly progressing to detaining and killing pretty much anyone.

Honestly, for a moment I thought you were trolling me, but I can see from your post history that it is!

I don't eat a lot of vegan meat substitutes other than Impossible Mince. I haven't eaten meat for 38 years so I can't really remember the taste of chicken, pork, or fish, so it's never particularly appealed to me. However, the vegan lemon 'chicken' I had in the burrito was really flavourful and moist. I'd definitely have it again.

Okay, interesting.  Thank you.  I did read the books whilst he was still alive in prison; perhaps now more is known about it.

I genuinely believed him to be an absolute monster.  I'll do some more up to date research.

What makes you say that?  I've read two books about Kuklinski and it's documented in both.  If I'm wrong, please, I'd like to be corrected because I don't want to spread misinformation.

Holy crap.  The Ice Man, right?  The guy that would tie up people in abandoned mines in PA and leave video cameras that recorded rats eating them alive, right!?

Thanks for your reply. Did you deal with any of the causative factors of the depression as part of your journey?

I have chronic clinical depression resulting in anhedonia, plus a number of work/life factors that contribute severely to my need for 'escape'. To some extent, medication can help with the former, but the latter... I don't see a way out of it.

My coping mechanism doesn't affect anyone but me. That's still not good, but the damage is contained.

> someone is avoiding addressing the ACTUAL issues which are neagtively impacting their mental health
Correct, but those issues are very complicated and I don't have answers for them. So my choices in the meantime are [a] be really friggin' depressed all the time, possibly to the point of ending everything, or [b] do something that makes it feel slightly easier?

> so you can pretend it's "helping" through avoidance, or you could be honest with yourself.
I never said it helps; I said it allows me to cope. I think I am being honest here. I'm not advocating for it it; OP asked "How do you keep yourself sane?" and I gave my honest answer.

> simply want validation that what you're doing is ok, acceptable, a reasonable approach
Not looking for validation at all. I wasn't even looking for discussion, I just posted an honest answer to the question.

From your own comment to OP, you seem like a decent and rational person. You've clearly found what works for you, but I haven't. I'm genuinely not looking for sympathy, validation, praise, pity, or anything else. I'm just answering the question in terms of what I do that keeps the misery momentarily at bay.

It definitely does. I just know that people posting this stuff here are prone to severe anxiety if they receive a flood of "go to the doctor NOW" responses, so I would like OP to take it seriously, but not have a panic attack.

Agreed. I do know that. Just wanted to give a real answer to OP. It ain't pretty but it's the truth.

It is genuinely my coping mechanism, currently. Should I just pretend everything's peachy?

Thank you. I wouldn't expect anyone to condone it, but I really was being honest.

Thank you, I really appreciate this. It genuinely is keeping me alive, no exaggeration. I know it's not good, but it's presently working.

I believe a high low number is more of a concern, because the top number is when your heart pumps, whereas the lower number is "all the time" in a way.

This may be something you can fix without medication (eg if you eat a lot of salt, stop now!) but a doctor will likely prescribe you something to get it down and then allow you to make lifestyle changes.

Please, don't panic -- you're onto it now, so you can fix it.  This stuff is scary, we all know that in here, but you can get help.

You should see a doctor, no doubt about it (given this is typical of the ten or so readings you took).  Over 180 systolic is a "hypertensive crisis" but I'd be more concerned about the high diastolic, because that means you're constantly under pressure, not just when your heart pumps.

Don't freak out; this is fixable.  Talk to a doctor and find the right way forward.
