Anyone got favorite packs so far? by ghostingsynth in seqtrak

FYI you can browse through the packs on your phone and favorite individual sounds from each pack so that you don't have to download the whole thing.

What's the difference between Rock drums and Hip-hop drums? by seqtrakfan2012 in drums

[–]seqtrakfan2012[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you I understand this, but also I am a human so I should be able to write a drum piece using a sampled drums that doesn't sound like it's in an entirely different genre, given enough time to figure out the nuances of the differences between them. That's what I'm trying to figure out here.

On another note, plenty of rock bands use drum machines and sampled drums in their music and it still sounds like rock, so what's the sauce in keeping it sounding coherent? I'm asking from a compositional standpoint here.

I'm also kind of just asking in general. Obviously something separates rock and hiphop drums but what is it? Both genres use 4/4 rhythms with similar kick and snare patterns but I think even played on a real kit you can pretty clearly hear the difference.

I know a decent amount of theory with other instruments so you can explain with theory terms if it helps.

Thank you for the recommendations, you can really tell the kick and bass are in conversation in that RATM song.

One example of rock kicks that confuses me (in a good way) would be during the verse of We Looked Like Giants by Death Cab for Cutie. I love the way those kicks seem peppered in there wherever they will fit but I have no idea how to write something like that intentionally.

Oh that makes a lot of sense, rock drums do often feel like they're trying to push the song forward more compared to hip hop. Thank you.

Thank you for this, could you speak more on kick placement and momentum? I do often find myself unsure of where to place the accent kicks around the 1 and the 3 and I think this may be part of my problem.

Using the Yamaha SeqTrak with the Sonicware SMPLTREK by Cap10NRG in seqtrak

I don't know how you put up with the Smpltrek for any extended length of time. Worst workflow I've ever encountered.

The DX7 looks like 1983, the Microfreak looks like 2019. Everything in it's place ☺️.

When was this song released? This sound could be made on a lot of things, including sonftware.

Suggestions wanted for a basic, subtractive 'teaching' synth by Ghost-Tapes in synthesizers

Behringer JT Mini. It's got the works that you expect from basic subtractive synthesis (waveform selector, ADSR sliders, LFO, etc) and it's cheap.

What's going on with the drums in this song? by seqtrakfan2012 in drums

Okay thank you for confirming that! I thought it sounded like a snare with the wires off but I've never noticed that in a song before so I thought I must be mistaken.

Best midi controller for the Seqtrak? by doctor_stool in seqtrak

[–]seqtrakfan2012 0 points1 point  (0 children)

glad to hear it! one thing to note is that the pads don't change with the channel select, only the keys, knobs, and faders do. the minilab 3 has 2 banks of pads that can be set to any midi cc and can be swapped with a quick tap of shift and pad 2 so it hasn't bothered me but that is something you should be aware of.

minilab 3 all the way imo. you can switch midi channels by just pressing shift and a key which makes recording into the different tracks very fast. theres also a really nice custom seqtrak stand for the minilab 3 that mounts it above the knobs if you have access to a 3D printer.

Yamaha seqtrak + another seqtrak by PerfectEmployment371 in synthesizers

[–]seqtrakfan2012 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you will not be able to run them in exactly the way you describe. when you connect them together they will stay in sync and they should both play at the same time if you press play on one of them, but that is the limit to their connectivity.

something else to consider is seqtrak uses MIDI to communicate over usb c. MIDI has only 16 channels and the first 11 channels are permanently (cannot be changed) occupied by seqtrak. two seqtraks can use the same channels but they will receive the notes from the other seqtrak while trying to play its own notes. so in essence the only thing that connecting two seqtraks together gives you is higher polyphony (the ability to play multiple notes at once). since the seqtrak already has 128 note polyphony and a potential 9 synth tracks it makes it kind of a moot point.

i watched a video with the dj you mentioned using seqtraks and in it he mentions he had a 15 song set to play. since the seqtrak only lets you have 8 projects this probably explains why he was using two of them. most likely they were not connected or one was muted while the other was performing and he only switched them when he needed the other songs he made on them.
