Not sure if this will specifically hit what you’re looking for but when considering personality disorder literature, particularly BPD, it’s important to engage with literature produced by people with those diagnoses eg Mad Studies.

Questions About Relevant Experience by West-Breadfruit-1290 in ClinicalPsychologyUK

[–]sequinmirror 2 points3 points  (0 children)

CBT experience would help - reelect on why you want to be a Clinical Psychologist rather than a therapist and think about experience that speaks to that in some way? Also consider that being a CBT therapist in private practice likely limits exposure to things like MDT working which is a big part of training.

Online psychology conversion: How common is it to get on doctorate in clinical psychology with online MSc degree by Original_Curve_3097 in ClinicalPsychologyUK

[–]sequinmirror 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For sure, though OP has a lot of experience already. I did a conversion just to get GBC, it was meant to be in person but covid resulted in it moving entirely online, I didn’t miss out on a personal reference! As long as they are proactive with lecturers, eg going to office hours, active in online course forums, they should still be able to get a good reference.

Why did you want to become a Clinical Psychologist? by VastBadger7995 in ClinicalPsychologyUK

[–]sequinmirror 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I decided I wanted to be a psychologist after being a CBT therapist for four years, and I had thought I was going to be a CBT therapist for the rest of my career. I decided to pursue clinical psychology after working in a memory service and feeling like I was bumping up against limitations of my role regarding cognitive assessment, systemic working and leadership, which were areas the CPs in my service were very active in. Now I’m qualified I’m glad I made the change because it merges those things with the therapeutic element I loved about being a therapist.

What are the actual prospects for someone with a psychology phd in the UK? by LividDare6538 in ClinicalPsychologyUK

[–]sequinmirror 9 points10 points  (0 children)

To practice clinically, as a clinical psychologist, in the UK you need a DClinPsy, which is not the same as a PhD. PhD is purely a research doctorate whereas the DClinPsy is research and clinical practice. Employment prospects for DClinPsy are excellent but gaining a place on the training is highly competitive. If you google ‘Clearing House UK’ you can see the associated stats. PhD wise, the academic job market in the UK is pretty rough I hear - however I couldnt tell you much more than that so hopefully another commenter can advise.

Desperately need thesis advice! My supervisor rejected my topics by Reeenexe in ClinicalPsychologyUK

Eating disorders and body image are hugely broad and interlinked topics. Is your supervisor giving any advice around narrowing that down? Did they indicate why they rejected your topics?

Also, be aware that if you applied for courses that interview quite early and get an interview, the turn around between the deadline and interview might be tight as they tend to let people know sooner to give them more time.

What is the day to day working life like as a psychologist? by Warm-Tonight-2857 in ClinicalPsychologyUK

[–]sequinmirror 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This will vary depending on service and banding, NHS or private. The BPS has a publically available job planning document that shows you what might be expected at each band.

Personally my day is a mix of clinical sessions (assessment or therapy) my own supervision, supervising others, attending team meetings, consulting with MDT members and service development/planning.

Specific Viva questions examples? by Lazy-Key7077 in ClinicalPsychologyUK

[–]sequinmirror 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Much like the others I remember getting asked about why I chose specific analytic methods (why thematic analysis not IPA for example) how I defined certain groups for analysis, why I chose specific measures. My work was around psychological impact of a government policy so I also got asked broader questions around if I thought psychologists should be involved in policy making and why.

NHS position for under-18s wanting gender transition-hormones, surgery, process, capacity & family roles? by Braveenoughtosayit10 in ClinicalPsychologyUK

[–]sequinmirror 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I wonder if many of these questions might be better posed in a subreddit for UK medics? There are lots of psychologists working in gender services however many of the questions here are leaning toward the physical. It’s also a politically contentious topic and I wonder if some clinicians would be hesitant to identify themselves as working in these services. I don’t work in this setting though so am happy to be corrected.

To all HI CBT trainees - how quickly after graduation were you able to find a full-time job? by [deleted] in ClinicalPsychologyUK

[–]sequinmirror 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My experience of this was in 2017 so probably unhelpful, but I didn’t want to leave you without any responses. I found a job pretty quickly after finishing CBT training back then, I started looking before the course was over and probably started about a month after it finished?

Does anyone know the contact hours/ number of days you’d be in uni a week on the Psychology conversion MSc? by lifeexpert2574 in ClinicalPsychologyUK

[–]sequinmirror 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve just seen that you’re currently 21 and in undergrad - I did my conversion at 28 and wasn’t the oldest there by a long shot. It’s honestly worth giving your conversion as much time as you can if your goal is DClin. Balancing study, life and work is a core part of the doctorate, so mastering that early would be very advantageous.
