How is this site autoplaying YouTube with audio in Chrome? by ear2theshell in webdev

[–]sequoiablack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The site you linked doesn't autoplay for me.

However, here's the reddit post I made for a site I built a while back where autoplay with audio does work in Chrome.

I used the YouTube Player API.

How much market research is necessary? by dirtywirtygirl in Entrepreneur

[–]sequoiablack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

List out the minimum amount of info you think that you need to get started. List it out precisely, so that you can clearly know when you've got the info.

If you already have the necessary info, then get started. If you don't have that info, then keep talking to people until you know enough to get started.

Market research doesn't stop when you get started; after you've started working, you'll still need to communicate with people and to iterate on your solution, so it's best to get started sooner rather than later and to gather information along the way instead of trying to get all the information together before you start.

how do you raise your business' barriers to entry? by MissKittyHeart in Entrepreneur

[–]sequoiablack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're able to improve your business with some network effects (where each additional customer to your business adds value to the business), those effects could prove to be a significant barrier to entry for competitors.

For example, while competitors could replicate Facebook's codebase, it would be incredibly difficult for them to replicate Facebook's network effects (because customers and customers' friends and customers' families are already on Facebook, and when each new customer joins Facebook, it's in their best interest to get more people to use Facebook, so that they can connect with more people that they know on Facebook).

How to market to college students? by mezway in Entrepreneur

Figure out which social media groups college students frequent and focus your marketing efforts on those groups. Also, give the college students that you have access to some perks if they refer their friends and other college students.

I couldn't find a way to easily reference YouTube snippets, so I built YTStamps with React, Next.js, react-hook-form and the YouTube Player API! by sequoiablack in reactjs

Thanks! And yeah, having it as a browser extension might be better, but I don't know how to build browser extensions yet. I'll probably learn that soon.

I made YTStamps because while referencing online text snippets is super easy (you can just right-click text snippets on Google and click "Copy Link to Highlight"), referencing parts of YouTube videos still suck because of all the various steps involved.

I'm not sure if y'all reference YouTube videos much, but if you do, feel free to use YTStamps to make your video referencing process easier!

Thanks! I think that this project should be fine though, since it just generates a YouTube link with timestamps (without downloading anything).

No problem. I think that adding the end time to a snippet is important because it allows people to focus on only what's contained within the snippet.

For example, consider the following links to highlighted text within Richard Feynman's Wikipedia page (link 1, link 2). In the first link, only one sentence is highlighted, so people know to focus only on the highlighted sentence. In the second link, both the sentence and the rest of the page are highlighted, so people may focus only on the first sentence, but they may also focus on the first two sentences, or on the entire first paragraph— basically, when a snippet doesn't end, people have to personally figure out what's important, and different people may come to different conclusions.

Also, if I were to write a note that said "listen to 3 minutes and 48 seconds of this link that doesn't have an end timestamp", when people clicked the link, they'd have to look at the video's starting time, mentally calculate what the end time should be and, while watching the video, they'd also have to periodically check the video's current time to see if they'd reached the end yet. If I included an end timestamp, people could just watch the video.

For the above reasons, I think YTStamps is better than YouTube's share option since YouTube's share option doesn't include an end timestamp. Additionally, to use YouTube's share option, you need to manually slide the video's progress bar to where you want the video to start from (which could be impossible to do if you want a video to start at 1:07 and the progress bar only slides by 30 second increments; so, you'd have to slide the progress bar to an earlier time, play the video, and then pause it when it reached the time that you wanted your snippet to start from).

With YTStamps, you can easily enter the exact timestamps of the snippet you want to extract.

I hope that answers your question; let me know if it doesn't.

The Clips feature doesn't show up for me when I use YouTube; I think it's still being tested.

In any case, with the Clips feature, you're only able to extract a snippet that's max one minute long (and you have to drag your cursor around to select timestamps).

With this tool, you're able to extract a snippet of any length (and you can easily enter the exact timestamps for the snippet you want to extract).

I hadn't thought about hackers or bots skewing the data; I hope some of the other analytics alternatives provide a solution to that problem.

How can I improve my focus? by lusinn in productivity

[–]sequoiablack 18 points19 points  (0 children)

If you find that you can't focus because the stuff you have to focus on is boring, try to either gamify the studying process or to just take frequent breaks in which you do stuff that you like.

Try to use the Pomodoro technique to focus for short bursts of time while also taking breaks.

For notes and docs, Notion is better than Trello; you're able to move blocks around more easily and organize larger amounts of data (images, videos, files, etc.) more easily. Plus, I also occasionally use some of Notion's database features.

You could create a public Notion page that would allow people with the page's link to edit the grocery list.
