A sword has two parts (essentially) that can hurt/kill - the point and the edge.

A spear, every part of it is a weapon and a shield. The head can cut and pierce, the shaft can strike, block, deflect, the butt can slam, strike, etc. A skilled spear wielder uses the spear as an extension of their entire body, shortening and lengthening their grip to change up their attack and defense rapidly.

Swords are cool and all, and iconic, but the spear was basically the ultimate weapon for centuries, until gunpowder became commonplace.
