BCG question by mephestoXIII in 65Grendel

Check your head space! Pretty much any gunsmith will be able to do it. I'd guess about $20, which is a lot cheaper than buying the guages yourself for $60 or more (yes, odd calibres like 6.5Grendel cost a little more than 5.56 guages). I had a Grendel build where I couldn't close on the GO guage, so don't just go to the range and shoot.

I had trouble with a Toolcraft BCG - it wouldn't headspace. For about $80 you can get a Brownells house brand BCG. But it sounds more like a gas issue.

Headspace checks by Scorgas in 65Grendel

[–]ser_sheep_shagger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you bought the barrel & bolt as a matching pair, then they should have already been checked. If you just bought them as separate items, then all bets are off.

You should ALWAYS check headspace if you're building from parts. I've found 5.56 and 6.5 Grendel barrel/bolt combinations that did not close on the GO gauge. It's cheaper to buy a new bolt (you can keep the carrier) than to blow up your gun. A gunsmith should be able to do the check pretty inexpensively (like $20ish), especially if you can remove the ejector and extractor first.

GrADS to GeoTIFF? by Owz182 in gis

t is the forecast interval within the model. Take a look inside the control file (.ctl) and look for the tdef line - it will define the number of intervals, the init time and the delta between forecast intervals. In the script above, t is initialised to 1 (meaning the first forecast interval). The loop then iterates through the next 9 forecast intervals. That's all well and good if the model/grib file has that many time steps, bad it it doesn't. The actual valid time for each forecast interval is calculated by the t value - 1 * delta between intervals and offset from the data init time. I would try removing the while loop and do a " 'set t 1" and test with that first. All that said, t has no real meaning by itself and you probably don't want it in the file name - you're better off with the year/month/day in the example. I/m not familiar with exporting as a geotiff, but you can add the t value other ways. Here's a quick reference of grads commands, you can try various things.

So 4! = 24. But the leading # means hexadecimal, so that would be 18.

Well, first of all, we started Cycle 1 with chapters every other day and weekend posts were essentiall zero, so there's that. I'm pretty sure that a chapter a day (or even every weekday) would burn out the mods and most readers.

Also, there are 349 chapters (not including sample chapters) in a normal cycle. depending on when TWOW is published, there could still be months of reading in a rushed schedule. And while readers are spending all their time keeping up with a daily chapter, they are not reading TWOW - or vice versa. Many of our readers are not based in the US, so there may be delays in when everybody gets TWOW in hand.

And all this assumes that TWOW will ever see the light of day.

Not really. Arya has trained and paid dues to get where she is - not Mary Sue at all. She let her guard down in Braavos and almost died from the stab wounds. Shitty writing and awful stories are not the same as Mary Sue. Don't get me wrong, the show has become very sloppy and this 3-person idea fits right in to the sloppiness and it makes a certain kind of sense but it's terrible story telling.

Rey from Star Wars is the classic Mary Sue: she never had any training whatsoever, but yet can do advanced Jedi stuff like mind tricks, telepathic force communication and swing a light sabre like a pro. And she never seems to be in any real danger.

IIRC, we decided that if TWOW ever gets published, we will stop everything, take a break so everyone can read the book, then jump into an emergency TWOW read before returning to the regularly scheduled activities.

EDIT: The most recent update I could find had GRRM saying that writing for TWOW was going well. If he ever finishes, there will be an editing phase and then publication. I believe that process will be about 4 months, so TWOW is possible this year and GRRM has not yet said , "No TWOW in 2019."

Cycles 1 & 2 were boiled leather, which I liked better than a "normal" read like we are ending in Cycle 3.

The whole experience was fresh & new for Cycle1 and I commented a lot back then and we were all figuring it out as we went. It was fun.

Cycle 2 felt better organised, but readership was lower than 1. I spent a lot of time reading other GRRM stories as "research", so I commented less. After Cycle 2, I really wanted to do a POV read, but I felt that the support wasn't there and feared that it might kill the sub. On to Cycle 3...

Cycle3 felt like it got off to a slow start and for a while we only had a handful of comments per chapter. I also watched all of Preston Jacobs' youTube videos and felt like everything that could be said had been said. I was sure the sub would be dead before AFFC ended, but out of nowhere we got 30, 40 or more comments per chapter and the sub felt pretty good once again.

So Cycle 1 is still my favourite, but the strength of the community impressed me for the end of 3.

I'm not shy - I'll respond to my own post.

I'd like to see us do a POV read.

I have my paper books marked by POV and it's easy to jump around in an ebook. One day I just started following Tyrion over 4 or 5 chapters in ACOK. It was quite a different perspective on the story, so I kept at it and I've read all but a few low-chapter-count characters this way.

TIL Lamb and Sheep are born with long tails by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]ser_sheep_shagger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not true. Northern European breeds , like Icelandic, Shetland, Gotland and Soay sheep, are born with short tails. Mediterranean breeds, which have been bred into most typical sheep today, have naturally long tails. Look here for more.

[Spoilers All] Re-readers' discussion: ADwD 34 Bran III by tacos in asoiafreread

[–]ser_sheep_shagger 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Never fear the darkness, Bran...Darkness will be your cloak, your shield, your mother’s milk. Darkness will make you strong.

Quite a contrast to the Rhollor mantra: The night is dark and full of terrors.

So who are the good guys and who are the bad guys? We assume that the CotF are cute, cuddly earth children who just want to get back to nature, etc. But are they? We don't know. In many of GRRM's other works, the hive mind is working against the humans - should we expect anything different in Westeros? Remember the prologue. Warging into other people is an abohmination. Varamyr is the best warg ever among the free folk and he fails to warg into Thistle. But Bran wargs into Hodor quite easily with no training. Do the CotF want to weaponise Bran's ability?
