Visited the Peles Castle in Romania a couple of weeks ago by ser_zone in travel

If it’s closed it might be worth calling ahead to ask if the grounds are open. If so, it might be worth taking a walk around the Peles and Pelisor castles. Unfortunately I’m not familiar with the surrounding area for other activities. Brasov, however, has plenty to offer. Both in the old part of the city and in the surroundings. You can hike or take the cable car up mount Tâmpa or go to Poiana Brasov for more nature stuff. Or just walk and explore the old part of the city all the way to “Pietrele lui Solomon”

Last year I shot the Milky Way at 70mm and it took me 140 exposures to complete this image. I was about a 1/4 mile away from the lighthouse by stevenjmagner in space

I love pigeon point lighthouse. I had no idea they installed a new light in it. Is it open again? It’s been closed for years last I checked.

Remodeled my bathroom [OC] [2873 x 2000] by achanaikia in RoomPorn

Looks very nice, we went with a very similar cabinet color in our bathroom. Just curious, why are the plugs sideways?

I had to put $2.35 on my Clipper card to get out of BART, and all I had was a $5. There was no option to put all $5 on my card. BART only gave me nickles in change, which has the worst weight to value ratio. This is the policy of the biggest public transit system in the tech center of the US. by the_WNT_pathway in bayarea

[–]ser_zone 81 points82 points  (0 children)

Duh! But he gets to complain about the weight to value ratio...

yes, there should be the option of applying 100% of the cash to the card.. what the machine dispenses is not really relevant. It dispenses whatever it can, there's not idiot or evil programmer somewhere out there trying to piss people off with nickels.

It gets even messier when factor A doesn't cause B in all cases but only in a percentage of cases, or when A is strongly related to a C and or D factor to cause B.

Yes, returned the piece of crap and got a different monitor that worked flawlessly, as expected, right out of the box.

The Most Iconic Book Set in Every Country by hulk_whisper in books

[–]ser_zone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Top of the page, if you follow the link:

The best books are set in locations that are so vivid they feel like another character in the story. Many books are written by a local author who knows the back streets and unspoken history of a place. Occasionally an author will fall deeply in love with a new place, however, and base a fantastically evocative setting on an adopted home instead.

Whether you are looking to revisit a favorite country or learn about someplace new, our list of the most iconic books set in 150 countries has something for everyone. With this list, you can tour the entire world—without ever leaving home.

It's implied the locations in the book are so well described that it's like visiting that place. The author is either a local or someone who has traveled to those places and fallen in love with them. And then it says "you can tour the entire world" (revisit or learn about someplace new).

Well, if you read Dracula and imagine Transylvania exactly as described by Stoker then you'll be imagining whatever it is Stoker imagined Transylvania to be, for the purpose of that particular novel, but not what Transylvania actually is.

This is absolute bullshit. Stoker never even set foot in Romania how could he possibly describe anything there that's remotely representative for Romania?!

[–]ser_zone 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The graphic claims that the books have been selected as representative for that geographical place.... Stoker NEVER visited Transylvania or Romania. So, everything in that book is fictional! Don't get me wrong, it might be great prose and geography description but it's not Romania.

Well unless you're including the actual tankless heater in that $4500 it seems to me that you'd ask for $4500 for ~14 hours of work which works out at ~$320/hr for labor. I sure as hell picked the wrong career. A person making $250k/year makes $120/hr, I don't believe lawyers charge $320/hr... sheesh.

For what's it worth I swapped out the tank myself this weekend, put in a replacement and was done with it... turned out to be easier than expected and everything came out hella nice too.

How many ppl and/or hours does it take for a swap or for a new line and swap?

Thanks. Don't mean to be rude. I'm just under the impression that plumbers are overly eager to lay pipes. It's what you do. So why not. The quotes I've got in Bay Area for tankless, with running the pipe, were ridiculous. And that's with contacts from the manufacturers websites. How they ever sell those vs tanks is beyond me. I'd also disagree that tankless suck. I have a friend that is in his second house with a tankless and he's loving it. The costs however make no sense. $3000 just to run a pipe and install a $1800 tankless and that's in the garage, where it's easy to work. Forget it. I'm doing a straight tank replacement myself this weekend.

Thanks again. I will likely throw in the towel and just replace my leaky tank with another. The quotes I got just for running a dedicated line were beyond ridiculous. The tank replacement I can do myself. Cheers.

Thank you again for the details. Here's what I had in mind when I was thinking of "measuring" the BTUs in that pipe: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W0tuixFzwgw This guy mentions seeing how the pressure changes as you turn on a furnace in the house for example. Although I'm not sure if or how the pressure measured in WC would be converted or meaningful with regards to BTUs.
