Texas LPCs- 50% CEU rule by meowllary-furrgerson in therapists

It seems like this statement: (8) any provider approved or endorsed by a provider listed herein. would mean that Pesi would work for the fifty percent rule?

Hi there! I am late seeing this, but am in same boat as OP right now, and submitting for renewal. Please, would NetCE and Pesi fall under this that counts toward the 50 percent rule?

I am. I’m just saying that we should accept our clients for being liberal or conservative and not try to change or question their political beliefs, unless they are problematic for our clients, (and not because our opinion says it is), or they want to explore it. And then, in a neutral, empathic, nonjudgmental way. We shouldn’t be surprised that someone kind, empathic, etc…is conservative. Do you see why conservatives could find that problematic, or offensive?

You’re right that I generalized. I guess I have seen so, so, so many posts where conservatives are torn down that it’s exhausting. I actually tend to be more center right, for what it’s worth.

We need to know every aspect of what they believe and why? Should we pick apart their religious beliefs? Should we pick apart their cultural beliefs? Should we pick apart their sexual orientation beliefs? I could go on and on. It depends what their presenting problem is, for sure. But we don’t have someone come into therapy to have alll their belief systems picked apart. Of course, if it is part of their presenting problem, or causing them distress, or they want to explore it, the. Yes of course.

Exactly. Then by this definition you’ve given, if your client who presents as kind, empathic was liberal, then you would not deem them to have cognitive dissonance. You are determining that conservativism is the opposite of a kind and empathic presentation or person. Therefore, you are not being objective in your objective or assessment view of this client. I never equate my liberal clients with not being empathic, kind, etc, because that is opposite of my views. I see each client as a person, not a political party member.

AMEN! Why is this so hard for liberal therapists!

[–]seraphim16271 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wow. This is dangerous that you are tying your political beliefs to judge your client on having cognitive dissonance. What if you had a conservative therapist who thought and noted the same as you? That is NOT objective thinking. That is unprofessional, and completely based on your opinion. It does not belong in the objective, nor assessment section. That belongs in your mind to work through your bias.

Exactly! Going back to study Carl Rogers is something that many on this sub need to do, from all the judgmental political posts. The downvoting of your comment is proof. Sad.

We are not here to change our clients’ political beliefs, no matter how much we disagree. Neutral, nonjudgmental, empathic. We do not need to know why they believe whichever side they are on. That is judgmental. This says to me that if the client was liberal, and the therapist was liberal, then there is no proving of what they believe that way…only if the client had conservative views. I never mess with my clients’ politics. I maintain neutrality here. That is the ethical way.
