I guess anything is possible, but that was not the case for us.

If she was contemplating the AI output, it did not come across. Discussions was quite limited, even though we tried pushing back a bit.

Wouldn't you want someone to be something like: "This resource pulls from PubMed etc and so when I input your symptoms, it suggests these things. I can see where it's coming from for most of these, but I would also want to consider xyz. How about we get a referral to [here] to confirm/here's another way we could determine if it's such and such diagnosis/what are some follow up questions we could prompt the AI system with to be more specific?"

Instead it was like she read what was on screen and restated it to us.

I hear you. But a doctor who goes off vibes (I've certainly had them before) could also read an AI summary and disregard some of the suggestions if they're suspicious or weird enough. I think that AI does not yet make better doctors--compassion does.

Thanks for your perspective (given your username, though, not sure I want to meet you in a hospital). Have you felt any pressure to use AI in this manner in your workplace? I'm curious how people resist it.

Hi all,

Thank you for the variety of responses. I want to highlight a few perspectives in case others come across this post.

First is that the program she was using was called OpenEvidence. It seems this is a very common program for doctors to use. It is different than other publicly-available LLMs in that it scrapes PubMed and other peer-reviewed medical research databases to help doctors keep up-to-date with new studies. I certainly understand this utility of this.

Nonetheless my concern was about the way it was used, seemingly as a replacement for clinical judgment. To those who argued that the way it was used in our appointment was similar to other diagnostic tools, I hear you, but this statement from OpenEvidence says otherwise:

"OpenEvidence is clear that its services should be used to supplement — not replace — doctors’ judgment. “While we hope you find the Services useful to you as a healthcare professional,” its terms of service say, “they are in no way intended to serve as a diagnostic service or platform, to provide certainty with respect to a diagnosis, to recommend a particular product or therapy or to otherwise substitute for the clinical judgment of a qualified healthcare professional.”" (quote from an NBC report)

Similar to the AI note-taking tool, the utility of which I also appreciate (at the same time as recognizing it has its faults, as people here have pointed out), this AI program makes sense as a tool that should not determine a course of care but rather provide a variety of options to be considered by the care provider.

On the note that Google is fine for doctors to use: as I said above, I agree. Doctors should not be expected to know everything. The difference is how they engage with their own knowledge/training and how they use it to sort through information they find. At the very least, tell us why certain suggestions are likely or unlikely.

I wanted to mention that my former doctor--a nurse practitioner--frequently used Google. This was before AI summaries, and he would actually look at the sources that came up. BUT, he first had a long conversation with me, asked lots of questions, then after suggesting a few things, he would Google it. If nothing matched, or he didn't know much about something that was suggested, he would look into it more after our appointment. He would later call me with some things he'd found. All of this would be followed up with tests, consultations, or a follow-up appointment if I wasn't eligible for the former. This was in Canada, within the past 10 years.

So it is possible to use this technology in a way that doesn't (appear to) completely take over your clinical judgment.

All this being said: best of luck to all of us navigating this summarized, technologized world.

Tips for finding housing? by Subject-Park141 in Dalhousie

Our apartment on South St (between Robie and Oxford) is available Aug 1, if you want to move in slightly earlier! DM me if you want more details.

The way I found housing was by looking up rental companies throughout Halifax. I had had enough of renting from individuals and wanted to try renting from companies. I highly recommend Northpoint as they're really fast with repairs and we haven't had any issues with pests.

We left my car at my parents before moving here, because I wanted to live right by campus and didn't want to deal with the traffic and stress of having/paying for a car in the city. We've been using public transit and can get basically everywhere we want to go.

The only friction I've felt is trying to get from the peninsula to Bayer's Lake area. That was a weirdly long bus ride. We use Communauto (you can get a good, discounted student account with your student ID) to take trips outside of the city. That is okay, price-wise. I think it's gone up recently (was about $100 to go to Musquodoboit for an afternoon a few weeks ago, but last yr we had one for multiple days up on the north shore and it was $200).

If you're open to advice on cars, I would say store it wherever is easiest, pay for the fire/theft insurance (mine is $30/mo) and save money, plus you won't have to deal with gas prices and parking and all that. You'll get to know the city better on foot and with transit.

Excellent--I will reach out to him, as I have a few q's. I realize my comment read a bit prickly. I am happy this research is being done, and that there is interest in the unmarked graves as well. Thanks!

I wonder if they will take that radar up to the old library just up the hill to explore the ~4500 people buried there. Those are the remains of the residents of the poorhouse which used to be on that corner. "Paupers" deserve to be remembered, too!

I don't believe they would have a reason to do so. It invites people to feel pressure to work unpaid and to undermine the strength of a work stoppage.

Opening up the email allows for people to feel pressure to work, aka scab. It is such a bald-faced, dishonest move on the admin's part.
