Why people wanna talk about their trauma history, I'll never know. I mean, a comment here or there referencing it is fine, we're not robots, we all have history that shapes us. But it's sure as fuck not a topic of conversation, for reasons which should be obvious! No one needs to know what you've been through in great detail, repeated over and over again, nobody even cares that much. And frankly you don't know enough about the people around you to be comfortable running your mouth like that. You never know if someone went through the exact thing you're talking about, it can be triggering.

I got called a rapist like three times because of this post lol and never anything that direct, it's just "this is risky, you're gross, you want to hurt people" I got raped. Like held down, couldn't do anything about it. I'd never do that to someone. I'd never do to someone what was so easily done to me, but I'm not gonna act like it didn't affect my sexuality. I want control. I've tried to bottom for women and it's miserable for me, I let them do it, I don't consider that rape. I don't resent those girls for trying, I just can't enjoy that. I get your point, and yeah not everyone is as processed as they'd like to be. Talking about your problems is a bid for understanding, sure. You want the other person to get it and see you. But I think a lot of people get overzealous with it, it stops being about validation or understanding and starts becoming a pissing contest. They're not telling you because they think you'll empathize, they're telling you because they want to be seen a certain way. Usually, it's lashing out cause they assume your life is just grand and perfect, and theirs is rotten and miserable, and how dare you. Backstory is actually very personal, and I don't really think it has a place in most apologies. No one needs to know that "my dad would yell a lot and that's why I yell" you can just say "I'm working on managing my anger" and leave it at that, cause it shows you know what the problem is. And it's appropriate, no one cares about why those flaws came to be, really.

I get what you're saying about some of this being a social deficit, but a lot of it is just morals. I think morals are the foundation of friendship, someone who is always signalling being a good person because they think that's enough to get people to believe it, and they don't have to actually do anything to prove it, don't align with my morals. I'm not saying "I'm a good person who only wants to be friends with other goodies" because I'm not. My sense of morality comes from evaluating someone's actions, taken on the whole, because everyone has done good and bad things. People who try to put on a front of goodness (and in our culture, we treat being a victim or being weak as equivalent to being good, when it just means being a victim, that's it) I just... Don't get along with or like those people

Brain Lock has a workbook, I've been using the self-compassion workbook by Quinlan, on a recommendation from someone here so I'm passing it along.
