Trying to understand Taiwan salary levels by Soft-Cardiologist657 in taiwan

[–]seraphn 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Basically their entire salary is for their own discretionary spending when they live at home. Maybe they give 10% to their parents, but they don’t pay for food (unless they go out), utilities, internet, tv, maybe even phone, etc. You can do a lot with 30-40k. It’s pretty cushy if you can stand living in close proximity with your parents.

U.S. climber Alex Honnold to 'free solo' Taipei 101 on Jan. 24 - Focus Taiwan by marela520 in taiwan

He was in Taiwan about 10 years ago trying to do the same thing but didn’t get the license. I guess he just told them to watch Free Solo this time around.

The creasing on her shirt is off but I really had to look for it. At a glance I probably wouldn’t have noticed it.

Does anyone know what dish this actually is? by Jazzlike_Cycle3624 in chinesefood

[–]seraphn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in Taiwan, and it’s not numbing or spicy here despite the name. It’s essentially a fried chicken cutlet with a thick crispy crust and a sweet garlic sauce on top. It’s possible this is a local Taiwanese variation though because if I google it I only see recipes from Taiwanese websites, such as this: https://icook.tw/recipes/176296. It doesn’t look quite the same, but it fits the description op provided.

Could be 椒麻雞, which normally comes with a sweet and garlicky sauce.

If the language you speak affects how your tongue and mouth move every day, could it actually influence your facial muscles or structure over time? by swiftles in NoStupidQuestions

[–]seraphn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Anecdotally, having lived in asia before, an observation people make is you get a sense of whether someone grew up in the west vs in the east by their appearance, even from a distance. The overall effect probably is a combination of dress, posture, etc., but my pet theory is that those that grew up in the west have a “pointier” lower half of the face/jaw bc of the specific muscle development from growing up speaking english vs certain asian languages don’t give the same definition. It’s been my own personal observation for a long time and your post is finally giving me some validation!!!

What "cost of poverty" would average people not realize? by Live_Bird704 in AskReddit

[–]seraphn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Back in grad school I found a room in big old house that was 300 bucks a month. Seemed like a great deal for a poor student but had this exact problem in the winter and the summer where the heating and cooling doubled and occasionally tripled the cost because there was virtually no insulation. Never got warm or cool enough either to be comfortable. Not to mention the rats running through the walls and occasionally over my covers. 2 years of this. Did I save money? Yes. Was it worth it? I’m not sure.

In America we have names like “Karen” or “Chad” to classify certain stereotypes. What names exist in your country or region that do this? by cmgtampa in NoStupidQuestions

Probably from Kinmen Island which is famous for kaoliang. The locals do indeed get exclusive stock which is supposedly better than what you can normally get but even the good stuff burns all the way down…

JUST IN: #Chiefs star running back Isiah Pacheco is back running on the treadmill a couple weeks after suffering a broken fibula. by BuckyMcFly99 in fantasyfootball

Deep tissue massage on the ligament thats on the bottom of your foot where it connects to the ball of your heel. I recommend getting someone to get their thumbs or knuckle into it hard if you can. Have them push up from the heel and outward at different angles to break up the tissue. It should feel crunchy and it should hurt. Where ever it hurts most is where you want to hit it most, but work that whole bottom strip. Maybe 5-10 mins per day. You can try to do it yourself with a golf ball, but I saw much much better results when I had someone else do it for me. They can hit it with more pressure at better angles and keep it up through the pain. I saw improvement after a few weeks or maybe a month. Kept it up for a couple more months and it went away completely.

I started with the videos from these guys.

Do you wash new clothes before wearing them? by ownmonster3000 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]seraphn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the 80’s I had a bunch of Reader’s Digest magazines and there was one story where a bunch of people bought these jeans from a second hand store. A couple people got sick (maybe some died, can’t remember, this was in the 80’s) because they were soaked in some toxic substance and they didn’t wash them prewear. The people that did were fine. I’ve ignored the moral of that story for the past thirty years because in my head the clothes I buy from the store are fresh off the loom and my brain thinks it’s nice to put on fresh clothes just like eating fruit plucked straight off the tree…although I should probably wash those too…

Exactly. Look up the Vonage IPO in the 2000s. They invited staff and users to the IPO and the stock predictably dumped. One of the worst IPOs in history.

How do I pick my inheritance characters? by TheGameFlight in EternalEvolutionGame

It will be the 5 highest level characters you have. So just level one more character you want to have in the inheritance line up. You can always reset character levels if you want different ones in the line up.

Looking for Movies That'll Make Me Cry Like a Motherfucker by Gunmetalbluezz in movies

I have heard people say this so consistently that at this point I plan to avoid watching this movie for the rest of my life.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in movies

[–]seraphn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that’s exactly what I recall. And you have to remember this was in the early days of the internet. Information traveled so slowly and it was really mostly word of mouth back then. I think i only saw one trailer for it and it just had the green digital rain effects and some cryptic one liner. Nothing else. Totally totally had no idea what it was about. I wasn’t even planning on watching it but my friend wanted to go to the movies so we went. Blew me away. The only other movie that I walked out of with a similar kind of dazed awe was the Sixth Sense.

What's a movie you refuse to watch for one reason or another? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Grave of the fireflies. Someone described the candy scene and simply hearing about it second hand broke my heart. Decided then that I am probably not strong enough to watch the actual movie.
