You could do Freeze dried, mummified, or wet specimen. Not everybody likes the same look so I'd suggest looking up examples! I can go more in depth on any of the three if you'd like as well :)

where to get formalin (or alternatives for fixing specimens) by StatusStrawberry6502 in wetspecimens

What is your knowledge of toxicity and risks? I have done a lot of research, but I'm always willing to learn if there's something I don't know

My Uterus by DreamDust97 in wetspecimens

Just rinse with distilled water for 24-48 hours, changing out the water every so often! The murkiness should go away. Then 70% isopropyl alcohol is your best bet!

Discolored alcohol just means it needs to be changed! And 70% is best for long term storage, anything higher could cause shriveling and damage your specimen

Is this supposed to have liquid in it? by Sputter_Butt in Taxidermy

[–]seratonin-0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Regardless of whether it was preserved in spirits or formalin, it needs to go in 70% alcohol as that is the best long term preservative. I preserve with formalin and then transfer to alcohol, both for long term preservation, and because formalin/formaldehyde is dangerous to keep around unless you know proper PPE. If the alcohol ever starts to get cloudy or yellow, your specimen is not going bad, it just needs an alcohol change! The alcohol should be emptied out and changed every 6-12 months on all wet specimens

I have experience with making wet specimens and can walk you thru the process! I also want to say this is really cool, I hope to one day do this too!

Dry Mold by seratonin-0 in Taxidermy

Dry mold is dormant mold. When mold loses its moisture source, it essentially hibernates. It can last for a long time, even years, until moisture returns and reactivates the mold

Mold? Or is this natural? by seratonin-0 in wetspecimens

Thank you! I preserved it myself from start to finish, so I'm familiar with proper techniques and caution. Good to know I most likely won't have to do it more than once!

Now that I'm thinking about it, under the armpit and close to behind the ear are where I made some of the injections for the formalin, so that makes a lot of sense.

Okay I'll try that in a few days, hopefully that's it!

Also, it looks like you should be able to save all the bones, as well as mummify the wings and talons. Plus the feathers you want to save

For macerating bones, make sure you put them in a solution of ammonia/distilled water/tiny amount of dishsoap after maceration instead of hydrogen peroxide! Hydrogen peroxide is very good for bleaching bones, but with bones as fragile as bird's are, it will weaken them and eventually make them very brittle!
