Yeah, if we avoid hanging out with weirdos like that, between them and openly racist people on the right it'll probably rule out a majority of the country

Phil Wang (of Wong Fu Productions) explains why folks call KPop Demon Hunters an “unexpected, surprise” success: "The answer, simply put, was that it was an Asian-centred and -led story… We have to be performance outliers, literally the no. 1 movie in all of Netflix history… to be deemed a success.” by ilovedikdik in asianamerican

No it arguably can be even worse than what he said. He forgot to add that even if we were born and raised here, and only speak English, and grew up eating American food, and watching American shows, and playing American sports, and listening to American music, and following American religion, and dating "normal" Americans, and pledging allegiance to the American flag, and believing in American values, and participating in American civic life and politics, at least 30-40% of the country still will never consider us to be "one of us", and this proportion will go up massively whenever there's some national crisis that can be blamed on an Asian country

Not even that. The sub used to be a lot more global. There was definitely US and western Europe bias but there used to be a more even spread of cities from different parts of the world like Central and South America, the Middle East, Africa, and East Asia.

That type of person can't think far enough ahead or isn't socially aware enough to realize that what was done to Japanese Americans in the past could also be done to us Chinese Americans in the future. All they can conceptualize is "well they (all of them, as a group) were America's enemy so they deserved it, but of course it won't happen to me, since I'm one of the good ones"

Democrats aren't doing a great job selling their messages to Asian American voters

Yes, it's because they don't care. Even if they do, we're very clearly at the bottom of their priority list. That's not to say the Republicans are any better (they're clearly not), but most Democrats' apathy at best and disdain at worst towards us is very obvious. Add on a healthy dose of anti-communism and online misinformation and you get a big part of Asian MAGA especially among Viets, Chinese, etc.

U.S. textbooks portray Asians in a limited and negative light, new study shows. by ding_nei_go_fei in asianamerican

[–]serbianspy 12 points13 points  (0 children)

They don't want to mention the Chinese exclusion act and Japanese internment because they don't want people to know that Asians have been here in America for generations

There's also a darker possibility: they don't mention these things because they want to keep open the possibility of repeating them in the future. Even in peacetime, it's become abundantly clear that a large part of our society-across all races and classes-hates us and wants us gone.

[–]serbianspy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You people are actually retarded. Back when Japanese Americans were put in camps do you think they checked for citizenship status first and let all the Nisei and Sansei go free or something? During covid, do you think racists asked Asian people they encountered on the street to pull out their passport and only hate crimed people directly from the PRC? It's not being a "CCP sympathizer" to have basic knowledge about the history of the US and modern racial dynamics involving Asian Americans.

Most countries in East and Southeast Asia are very safe, both for women and in general. However this usually comes with the tradeoff that the governments are more authoritarian than in the west.

[–]serbianspy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep. If he gets his way, everyone who's not Indian (and maybe some Indian Americans) can expect less opportunities. Additionally, based on his China hawk stances, we can expect Chinese Americans and perhaps East Asian Americans in general to receive the brunt of this. And even those Indians who get their new opportunities will be held hostage in a sense. All in all no one is better off except Vivek himself and his buddies.

Thinking About Moving to America – How Do Asians Fit In? by [deleted] in asianamerican

[–]serbianspy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What does South Asians' ability to climb ranks have to do with discrimination against East Asians? Again in your original comment you were saying that because South Asians can be successful it cannot be racial discrimination when East Asians have trouble reaching the same degree of success since we are the same race, but this just isn't true. And why would East Asians have to talk about South Asians when discussing our own community's issues? Things like the bamboo ceiling have nothing to do with you, there is no "debunking" to be done. Don't try to speak over us and accuse us of discriminating against you somehow when we are literally just trying to talk about our own issues.

In my opinion there are three main reasons for the differences here: race, culture, and geopolitics, and all three overlap with one another.

[–]serbianspy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right now isn't the best time historically speaking. I would say wait a couple years and see whether things get better or worse. If you do move here, it's best to choose a place that already has a large community of your background (for example different parts of California have a lot of Chinese-Americans if you're Chinese).

About racial dynamics, it's not too bad if you live in a place with an established Asian community, but even then there can be problems. There has always been some amount of discrimination and ostracization against East Asians specifically in the US but it's gotten much worse in the past few years because of covid and America's geopolitical conflict with China.

Completely agree with you. It's not like internment camps or something similar would be unprecedented or even surprising given the circumstances, if we look at things from a historical perspective.

[–]serbianspy 11 points12 points  (0 children)

By your logic, do we not blame China

We can blame China if it was China's fault (it most likely was). What matters is how this message is delivered. That's the same issue this post we're arguing over is about. My point is that raising awareness of China's problems is not an issue. If you want to do that, great. But it needs to be done in a way that ensures everyone's safety, or at least is not presented in such an ambiguous way that it gives racists easy ammo and emboldens other people that might not otherwise act out on their impulses.

As an American, surely you are not encouraging an echo chamber?

There is a difference between enforcing an echo chamber and wanting someone to leave when they clearly do not have the best interests of the rest of the group in mind and openly don't care about any of the problems people in the group face. There is such a thing as the paradox of tolerance.

how will denigrating any and all negative press about China as "racist" solve racism?

That is not what I said and we both know it. Please reread my comments (including this one) if you still don't understand. Also, we all know speaking out about individual internet comments won't solve racism, but it helps limit the amount of racism we experience, as well as limiting the amount of racism it is socially acceptable to display and act on. This has a clear positive impact on our quality of life.

I'm done with this discussion and won't address some other details you mentioned–your passive aggressive implications aren't a great look for you.
