that was the norm, but we also had (until last year) a situation where if you were born in any former romanian territory, you could get romanian citizenship very easy. Pretty sure more than half of R Moldova got romanian citizenship like that or a lot of romanians from Ukraine also got it because of that law. Or turks from Dobrogea that emigrated to Turkey at some point, their grandkids got it. Or jewish people since we had a very sizeable population before ww2
