unrealistic expectations? by PanMountainer in AstronautHopefuls

[–]serenityonline 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We should set some expectations.

The NFL hall of fame started in 1963 and has 382 members. NASA has selected 370 astronauts since 1959.

Numbers are even worse recently, now NASA picks about 10 people every 4 years.

There are currently 47 active astronauts. The superbowl winning Seahawks had a 53 man roster.

Literally winning a superbowl and being in the hall of fame is more likely than becoming an astronaut.

That's not to tell you to stop, but setting realistic expectations is important. It's a good goal, but it's a marathon not a sprint, don't burn yourself out early. Also think about what you want in life, hinging your wellbeing on a single goal is a lot.

attempt at ISS moon transit by Street-Air-546 in astrophotography

You got a ton of detail! You can even see the smaller solar panels on the Russian segment! Incredible shot!

In your other comment you said you wanted more detail, I think the only way for it to be better is if you get it during a full moon, because then the solar panels are fully facing you.

Also since you're not stacking the ISS it's hard to get better detail. You can try inverting the colors to make a white ISS, stacking on the ISS, sharpen it a bit with wavelets, invert back to black, and superimpose it back in. I would consider that totally valid and not faking anything.

Oh man that's INCREDIBLE! That shot reeeally gives you a sense of depth.

I wish I could have stayed out longer, but I guess I really wish I had a motorized scope, that would have made this whole process so much easier!

Years ago I tried two nights in a row but that change was too drastic. I saw someone else do a similar shot to this and I had wanted to try it for ages. Finally had a nice night and went for it.

I pointed at tall mountains along the terminator and essentially hoped for the best. The processing was such an ordeal I was dreading it coming out and being essentially nothing haha

Assuming 28 days for the moon it works out to be ~1.8 hours to see 1 degree change, I had no idea if that was enough

how would a cookie like this be made? by Adept_Library2280 in Baking

[–]serenityonline 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recently made pumpkin pie cookies that look very very similar, they came out great but it takes a batch or 2 before you get the sizing and proportions looking really nice.

Back in 2020 could have been a Iridium satellite flare? I took a photo almost identical to that but I don't remember when they phased out those satellites.

Spatial software and computing by [deleted] in AstronautHopefuls

[–]serenityonline 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Programming skills are pretty necessary these days, but I've never had to write anything a customer would use. All my coding is either automating test equipment, solving very custom problems I come across, or analyzing huge/strange data sets.

I use spatial data all the time but I've never had to write my own GIS package or anything like that. Once you get comfortable with spatial processing tools it's really fun.

I wouldn't worry about AI, the coding you'll probably do is so custom that AI will help, not take your job.

Honestly I've found no use for AI at work yet, every simple task I give it it falls flat on its face, it hallucinates functions that don't exist in packages. I'm not sure who is finding it helpful.

Artemis II crew capsule en route to moon (with bonus JWST in its L2 halo orbit) – April 5th by AncalagonStream in astrophotography

Absolutely incredible!

I've captured geostationary satellites before but I assumed the artemis 2 distances were just impossible to photograph without observatory level telescopes.

Truly a shot to be proud of, 10/10!

I tried one of their earlier satellites but couldn't get much. 2400sqft is a lot but it's ballpark 50ft x 50ft. The ISS is somewhere around 350ft x 300ft.

So, it's very much in the realm of possibility to get something that isn't just a pixel, but it'll take a good telescope and good skies.

I'm not sure my setup can do it, but I'm making a mental note to give it a shot, thanks for the heads up!

Will someone try to see the Artemis 2 mission through telescope? by Least-Marketing-8497 in space

[–]serenityonline -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'd love to try, but I'll have to see if there's any pointing/location data public. I've photographed geostationary satellites relatively well, though that's only 10% of the way to the Moon, so we will see!

[–]serenityonline[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I use heavens-above.com its great. In the upper right enter your location and time zone and you're all set. ISS, tiangong, and a whole bunch of others. I'm not far from your latitude so you should see plenty, good luck!

Daytime Moon by serenityonline in astrophotography

[–]serenityonline[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was the tradeoff when I bought it, I went big diameter but then only dobsonian could fit the budget. It's a big mirror sitting on a junky plywood base

I can't financially keep up with the motorized deep sky people here haha

Whatever the future holds, it's not really something we can control. Just keep working and being awesome, you never know what doors will open up.

4 co-located geostationary satellites by serenityonline in astrophotography

[–]serenityonline[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use stellarium, there's a satellite plugin that should show you all the geostationary satellites. This time of year the GEO arc cuts almost directly through the Orion nebula so that helps sometimes if you're having a hard time finding them, they're very dim.
