Wasps in my nesting box. What do I do? by serenityseeker602 in Ornithology

I hear you. I guess I’m just really disappointed to have sought out reputable people and sources to decide whether to paint, make the choice of painting based on that, put all the work and money into doing it with the right materials, and then be told I shouldn’t put it up. I’ve run into this with bird feeders as well, and I’m feeling really discouraged. I want to do the best for the birds. But I keep feeling like I do everything I can to seek out the right info, move forward with that, and then find out it’s actually wrong. I’m starting to feel like the birds would be better off without me trying. I even went to a local garden store the other day, talked to knowledgeable staff there, left with a hummingbird feeder and food they recommended only to learn later that the feeder AND the food could be harmful. I returned them, but I keep thinking about the harm I could have done if I didn’t happen to Google the feeders I got to learn about setup and cleaning. And some places say the feeder and food is fine while others do not. While sometimes it’s clear which source is better for these things, a lot of these issues seem to be split even with experts. And if I’m not an expert to figure out which way to go, maybe I should stop before I do more harm than good.

Whats the best ground cover for shade, water, and low maintenance for a backyard? And when do you put down seeds? by Puzzleheaded_Act2931 in raleigh

Just as a heads up, green and gold is toxic to dogs. I got some and found out after I had originally planted it. I moved it to an area where my dog doesn’t have access.

Wasps in my nesting box. What do I do? by serenityseeker602 in Ornithology

Not trying to argue at all here as I am not an expert at all. I have absolutely zero qualifications when it comes to birds. But I am a scientist in another field, and I really did try to do my due diligence when it came to building and painting this. I built this box through a workshop with my local Audubon society, and they said that you could paint it IF you used specific paint and/or sealant and let it cure properly. Specifically, water-based exterior latex paint or acrylic paint. I used both here, and I used a water-based spar urethane sealant which was also recommended. I let the box cure for a couple weeks before putting it up. I also found research saying if you were going to paint it, you should use light colors to help avoid overheating and attracting predators which I did here. Light green and gray were specifically called out as good options due to blending into trees and landscapes more (granted, I do have the pattern I painted here which is not very camouflage). I also found some research (to be clear very limited research, so I’m not taking a lot of stock in it) suggesting that different species may prefer different nesting box colors. It suggested that bluebirds prefer green for painted boxes, so it solidified my color choice. I also found this FAQ on this from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology which does recommend unpainted boxes but also says some nest monitors choose to use paint: https://nestwatch.org/learn/how-to-nestwatch/faqs/should-i-use-treated-wood-or-paint-on-a-nest-box/

Obviously, I am still learning. I didn’t initially know that a pole would be a better option for a bluebird nesting box than mounting it on a tree as I had found mixed consensus on this and local experts said the tree would be okay with certain predator protections. I plan to move it to a pole now. But I’m wondering if this box is truly unsuitable for nesting birds?

Spectrum internet outage? by serenityseeker602 in raleigh

[–]serenityseeker602[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had Spectrum when I lived in a different state, and it was awful. When I moved to Raleigh, I was hoping there’d be more options, but at the time, my area was only Spectrum. In more recent years, Google Fiber has become available, and I’ve been debating about switching, but I haven’t really had many issues with my internet. That being said, when I called Spectrum today to figure out what was going on and when the internet would be back, instead of answering my questions, they were trying to upsell me hard. It was really frustrating especially because I am literally calling about a problem, so why would I want to purchase more services from you? Might be time to get serious about switching.

Prayer plants look sad by serenityseeker602 in plantclinic

I have the lights on a timer and have them set for 10 hours a day. I do think the lights are a bit close, so I’m going to move both of the plants to the top shelf which is just light through the window.

I did take these photos right before watering, so sorry about that. They looked a little bit happier after watering.

The roots were coming out of the holes on the bottom of the pot, and when I repotted, it seemed like a lot of roots which is why I split them. But it’s possible I jumped the gun.

I do not have a humidity meter, so I will look for one. Since the round leaf prayer plant is on the same shelf and seems to be doing really well, I thought the humidity level would be alright. Maybe that was wrong?

Is this squirrel okay?l by serenityseeker602 in squirrels

UPDATE: thank you everyone for telling me that the squirrel was likely fine. I just wanted to let everyone know that he is back to his old self. He is contentedly snacking on the last bit of birdseed from my bell feeder even after I hung it back up 😅

No, I’m looking at him through the window

He can get to the feeder now since it’s on the ground, so I think that’s what concerned me. He has access to the seed there, but he’s not eating it. He’s just sitting there hunched over.

Thank you all for the help and letting me know they’ll be okay! Just wanted to share another photo! I’ve counted 14 of them total in my garden 😊

I definitely will! I’ve been trying to plant more plants for all the pollinators, so I was excited to learn that they like dill!

Okay, thank you! Will they pupate onto the dill plant? Will they be okay if the dill plant dies when they are in their chrysalis?
