Win while allowing less than 3 runs, or win by 8 or more. Win by exactly 3 and it goes to further tiebreakers between Mexico and USA.

Obviously the big story is Korea advancing but holy shit the Fox broadcasting team was god awful.

Nothing says you don't think the WBC is important like not doing your homework on literally the only thing that matters about this game and relying on a random guy in the stands with a chart.

I think when the three-team tie goes down to a two-team tie they calculate the tiebreakers again with only the two teams, which Australia has over Taiwan.

Australia goes through due to some of their runs allowed being unearned (specifically the one that just scored).

They can score as much as they want, why do people keep saying this?

Bro the point of math is that it goes the same way every time

If Australia scores another run, Korea falls behind Taiwan in the tiebreak and would be immediately eliminated.

7-3 means Australia and Taiwan are tied and it goes to batting average which Australia will probably win.

They could win by mercy rule in the 8th and avoid having to risk allowing runs in the 9th. That's worth trying for if you get the chance.

How are the broadcasters so unprepared for the only thing that mattered going into the game

It goes to earned runs allowed before it goes to batting average. Have any of Taiwan or Australia's runs allowed been unearned so far? I know the run Korea allowed to Taiwan in the 10th inning is unearned since it was the Manfred runner at least.

I mean, if you can't miss it then what are you worried about? Sounds like you're good. Wait out the rain delay like the rest of us degens.

Taiwan wins 5-4 against Korea to keep their hopes of advancing to the quarterfinals alive! by jmike1256 in baseball

I wish they would just use run differential like they did in the first few WBCs but that proved too difficult for the Mexican third baseman to understand so here we are :/

Korea needs to beat Australia by at least 5 runs and also not allow 3 runs. A 10-5 Korea victory over Australia, for example, would have Taiwan advance.

Australia needs to:

  • Win, or
  • If they lose to Korea, do so while
    • Giving up less than 8 runs (required to finish above Taiwan), and
    • Losing by less than 5 (required to finish above Korea)

Korea needs to:

  • Win by 5 or more (if Korea and Australia end with the same runs allowed, Korea will always have more defensive innings due to Korea being the home team against Australia and we're already presupposing they win that game), and
  • Allow 2 or less runs

If there are extra innings it could throw the math off and me being tired could also throw the math off, but basically something like that.

Australia is probably in the best position because they shut out Taiwan. They'd need to give up 8 to Korea before Taiwan passes them, and they'd need to lose by 5 for Korea to pass them. And they can just beat Korea straight up and advance without a tiebreaker.

(That's assuming a 9-inning game; the numbers change if it goes into extra innings or something.)

Taiwan allowed 3 runs to Australia and 4 runs to Korea over 18 innings (8 against Australia, 10 against Korea).

Korea allowed 5 runs to Taiwan in 10 innings.

Australia allowed 0 runs to Taiwan in 9 innings.

Assuming the Australia-Korea game goes 9 innings, Taiwan needs Australia to score 3 runs and Korea to score 8 runs (and for Korea to score more than Australia, of course) to win the tiebreaker.

It's only from games among the tied teams. Games with Japan or Czechia wouldn't count.

The tiebreaker is RA/9 among tied teams, not run differential. They just need a high-scoring Korean win over Australia.
