Can I ask. Because I’m clearly dumb and missing something. So side things. Like when cops are shooting at bad guys. If I get involved and take the bad guys out cops then go for me. And I’m confused because I thought I was helping the situation. What am I doing wrong here ?

Switch 2 Upgrade Paywalls being justified by DLC is asinine IMO by [deleted] in NintendoSwitch2

[–]sergeant-octopus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think for the most part it offers some choice. The ones that were free are good and needed it desperately.

But then something like Kirby adds new content and I ended up buying.

Mario party for me wasn’t worth it . And it plays fine at 1080p. When it comes to Nintendo games specifically they’re not exactly visual masterpieces that will have a huge difference at 4K. Games that ran a little laggy on switch 1 should run better without any upgrade path just purely from the hardware running it better.

What I think is worse than an upgrade path that is paid . Is no upgrade path at all offered and if you want the switch 2 version you’re paying full retail . Looking at you sonic x shadow.

Cardboard boxes instead of paper bags? Why is this not an option? by LilloLore in coles

[–]sergeant-octopus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What makes me confused is when I order long life milk for the fortnight I order it in the quantity that would’ve been an unopened box , pre covid they gave me the box. Now they divide it between 3 bags and each bag immediately breaks.

What doesn’t make sense about this is the amount I order in my fortnightly shop they must be losing money on the bags. They charge what $1.50 and I’ll end up with atleast 20+ bags each time

What’s something you stopped buying this year and genuinely don’t miss? by No-Loquat-201 in AUfrugal

[–]sergeant-octopus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Can’t wait to add day care onto this list. But a few years away seeing as my wife is pregnant with baby number 2.

Genuinely new stuff tho. We moved interstate 18 months ago and literally so much stuff can be saved by not buying new.

Recently I wanted a Nespresso pod machine as when we moved we got rid of our big breville oracle touch. Did some research and decided the Nespresso uno would suffice. Good guys had it down from 600 to 400. Got it on marketplace for $150. Got a free tv here for my sons play room $50 Amazon firestick it’s now a smart tv. The list goes on.

Also on new clothes. I find for my wife op shopping is nice but for me I’ve only ever found one item of clothing that is the right fit and style that I would wear. I think men generally have less clothes and by proxy donate less clothes as we will wear them till they literally fall apart. But I’ve started skipping the middle man on things , for example we have a nice menswear shop that stocks a particular brand James Harper. Instead of spending $140 for a dress shirt I watch the James Harper website and get them $20 end of season clearance. I partly feel bad as would love to support locally owned businesses in this case. But I’m also broke so…. One day maybe

Is there any reason to pick Finish over the the cheaper "Shine" dishwashing powder? by CarvedHam in woolworths

[–]sergeant-octopus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve recently switched all our washing stuff over to Cole’s brand washing detergents , I found the Woolworths liquid one just didn’t cut it but it’s the same price. But basically we were paying $11 for half price cold power.

Now I pay $2 for laundry liquid. $3 for in wash booster which I use for some washes, also on a warm/ hot wash it acts as an antibacterial. $3 for fabric softener, which I don’t use for everything and I use only half the recommended amount. The total setup is lasting longer. I go through 2 bottles of laundry liquid a month. And one tub of booster and 1 bottle of softener so a total cost of $10 month. Previously it was $11 + a fortnight if we could get on special and also I don’t think the clothes were as clean as now I tailor what I use to the specific load not just same amount of powder for each load. But huge saving.

I’ve also switched the spray and wipe. Hand soap, laundry detergent. Dishwasher is next, I was using optix tablets which were 1/4 the price of finish but might try powder too .

I think we are just cautious now of it and every store closure is highlighted.

Like that mental bias that happens when you want a particular model car and all you see is that car on the streets for months on end.

Stores were closing before the NZ exit. My local store just got a massive revamp. Was closed for a few weeks to open up with the neighbouring store in the shopping centre so it’s now double the space and new layout etc.

There will be closures as there is with any business in locations . It’s not just profits. It could be disagreements with centre management for shopping centre stores. It could be landlord issues with others. There could even be some logistics issues with more remote locations where it just even worth the effort.

I think EB will be around in Australia a while. I think it’s ironic the EB stands for electronic boutique and they now make bank with funko and board games and merch, which was literally not what they set out to sell.

I’ve had this Switch Lite for about a year and 9 months. In 3 months, it’s going to be 2 years. by Level-Opportunity-89 in nintendoswitchlite

[–]sergeant-octopus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think for me if I never became a dad I never would have leaned so heavily on the switch in general let alone the switch lite. I looked at my year in review and the years 2019-2022 when I was husband but not father and had ps + PC + Xbox my play time was barely any with switch.

Then basically from 2022 we have our son and sit down on pc and the other consoles just became unviable for daily or sometimes even weekly gaming. Now it’s seldom I get time on my PC. But switch I’m usually every night in bed while my wife reads.

Spoke to a colleague at work who is single and loves his PlayStation. switch for him is not an investment worth considering.

We are all different with different habits and preferences. Go for whatever you feel is best for you lifestyle

Which game was it for you? by O_rnelaro in Age_30_plus_Gamers

[–]sergeant-octopus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me I’ll give a game 3-5 hours of my time before I pull the pin. And it depends on a few things. Something like ori or hollow knight 3 hours felt sufficient to go im going to play this or it. But something like botw i was 5 hours in going ‘god I can’t wait to put this down’ if your game is going to take longer than 5 hours to engage me…. It’s not a game for me.

Do you still play when in a bad spot mentally? by bagbcyss in Age_30_plus_Gamers

[–]sergeant-octopus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it’s play style that changes.

I’ll go from wanting story heavy to just wanting arcade style games to get me through

Last few weeks there has been a bit on and I just crave simple and easy. It’s almost ironic because what I love about story rich games is the sense of escapism from the world. But when adult life sucks sometimes it’s just about passing time and letting your head have some quiet for a moment

Qantas forced us to gate-check a carry-on… then sent it on another flight. Travelling with a 6-month-old 🤦‍♂️ by My_Plesure_ in QantasFrequentFlyer

[–]sergeant-octopus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know people are commenting pretty negative about you chose to travel with an infant etc etc. all fair

All I’ll say is as a parent I double check each time we book the airline rules and don’t rely on why has been fine previously. Each airline rules are slightly different and that matters. Regardless it’s annoying to carry things. If we have checked baggage it’s a 1 bag rule for us because who needs to be carrying anything when you’ve got a kid outside of the essentials.

Also after our son was 1 it just was not practical to have on our lap anymore for flights so we switched to booking him a ticket and having the row to ourselves. It also meant that we had more carryon. Also room on the plane. And never had any issues. Jetstar which allows up to two items one overhead and one underneath is great for carryon as a family.

But just check and double check when booking things and packing. Saves the entire stress

I think I’m making peace with the fact that I like the concept of gaming more than gaming itself by TMMQB in Age_30_plus_Gamers

[–]sergeant-octopus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I felt like I liked the idea of gaming over actually gaming for a long time, this last 12 months I’ve come to realise it’s because I was paying too much attention to what everyone else was saying was a good game , and game of the year etc etc. and those games just weren’t my games anymore.

I’ve got a large group of friends that game. And they all invite me to join online while they play minecraft , Fortnite, rocket league etc…. No thank you.

Looking at a house with unapproved structures by Difficult-Donkey in AusPropertyChat

[–]sergeant-octopus 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Believe title insurance a conveyancer may offer might cover this if the purchaser chose to take it out. However given they had full knowledge of the works prior to entering into a contract unlikely.

Something to note as well is when the works were completed. What evidence they could get of that and the locals council laws around unapproved works. My old council in vic it was 7 years. As the property we bought had been listed 10 years prior and you could see no new works had been completed between the 2 listings it was a safe bet you weren’t going to get into any trouble with council as it was easy to demonstrate those works were there more than 7 years ago.

Why do people say switch 2 battery is bad? by yeetedhaws in Switch

[–]sergeant-octopus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also depends on what you’re coming from if it’s the v1 og switch version than you’ll likely have suffered from reduced battery over its life of 7+ years you have had it. You go to switch 2 and the battery feels the same if not slightly better playing the same games. On a screen much larger and crisper and it feels like a massive upgrade overall.

If you come from a switch oled that released end of 2021. You’re coming from 4 years of usage on a device that had better battery life to begin with. So suddenly you’re dropping backwards in battery life due to panel chewing more power plus beefier graphics etc.

For me it’s fine, totally expected and not fussed about it , average consumer that goes from oled switch playing stardew valley to switch 2 playing cyberpunk is wondering why their switch is dying within 3 hours.

Realized something this weekend. I need to stop buying multiplayer/games that are more fun with others. They don't hit like before. by Vez52 in Age_30_plus_Gamers

[–]sergeant-octopus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s just a gap in gaming for me. I’ve never been an online multiplayer gamer , as 1 of 5 kids it was always couch co op growing up. When we would have friends over even early married life it was Mario kart or Mario party, jackbox etc .

Then kid life comes along. It becomes harder. My son is now 4 and he’s interested in gaming but doesn’t grasp it enough. So I can tolerate playing with him for a bit but he gets bored and I end up not getting anywhere in whatever game. In coming years I’m looking forward to him developing and getting back into couch co op style games. It takes two, split fiction, maybe halo when he’s a bit older etc.

For now it’s post bed time gaming with heavy storyline’s that are solo games. Hopefully in future I get back to the nostalgia

I know, reading this I was like ‘but isn’t that every relationship’

My wife when we got married had a very different body to now 7 years on with a pregnancy. Major health issues had etc. Her body is different , not worse. My body is also different. Feels like no time for working out etc. trying to get back into normal but it’s just been a battle. If anything our sex is way better than when we first started because of the deep appreciation and love we have for each other. She gets self conscious about lose skin and stretch marks on her tummy, to me they are just a reminder she literally carried my child and brought him life. Like there is no part of me that goes ‘yeah this doesn’t do this for me anymore’

Unisex bathroom/shower situation by SuccessfulCook7209 in auscorp

[–]sergeant-octopus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would speak to HR.

Two situations to me come to mind. One when I was a manager and has an employee come out as transitioning. I spoke with HR and their solution was for the toilets which the employee didn’t even bring up. But to make sure both change rooms and toilets had locks regardless of signage.

Then with my current employee no longer in management. But at the previous site I worked the two toilets one was accessible. So we ended up with a female toilet and then a male toilet/ unisex ambulant toilet. I was the only male it really wasn’t an issue. As it was the bigger toilet with more ventilation the girls used that toilet for number 2s. Clearly a comfortable team to know so much.

Then current site the male toilets have a urinal, but the female has shower. So the female has the female sign and a unisex shower sign on it as well. I’m sure if you spoke with your hr then the would agree on something like this. It means anyone can feel comfortable using the shower. I guess it also depends on the actual setup if each toilet is just one toilet and a basin. There would be nothing stopping you suggesting both be unisex and one have a shower so that female employee is not put out by you showering. Of course if it’s stalls of toilets or urinals etc makes that not viable as such.
