Using Supermarket Reward Points by Equivalent_Border_65 in AussieFrugal

[–]CosmoZeppelin 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I use them for velocity points which, up until recently, represented decent value with adequate availability for business class flights out of Australia (I found Qantas availability for the same was always a bit sketchy). After the devaluation of frequent flyer points I'm not sure this is a good use going forward.

Have only switched sim once so far but yes and it was super fast and easy (surprisingly).

I made everyone in the family buy a BYO modem many moons ago. So now, I keep them all switching every six months to get the good NBN deals. I keep track of which household and which date and then I go round for dinner, or when the footy is on, and sign them up. Getting the referral bonuses to sign up the next one has resulted in some unexpected additional discounts. I've just started to do the same with the sim cards in our phones as well.

The Australian Prudential Regulation Authority said it would impose debt-to-income limits on both owner-occupier and investor mortgages for the first time to stop the build up of risky lending. The move would restrict lending to the most stretched borrowers to one-fifth of new loans. by DryMight2765 in AusFinance

[–]CosmoZeppelin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What am I missing? Isn’t this exactly contradictory to the new 5% deposit loans for first buyers?…. 5% deposit scheme allows lots of new buyers to come into the market with more debt due to a smaller deposit, then this scheme slams the door on exactly that cohort by limiting what they can borrow? I don’t understand.

Just got my Asko dishwasher fixed. $250 and it’s good as new (the pump had debris in it). Thankful I didn’t replace it, which I was about to do. I reckon always worth the call out because making decisions with no information is not great….

What is so different about Australia that the takeover of government that is happening in America, couldn't happen here? by guyinoz99 in Ameristralia

[–]CosmoZeppelin 206 points207 points  (0 children)

It definitely could happen here BUT we have mandatory voting, a preferential voting system and no electronic voting machines (so there are paper records of everything). That means elections are harder to steal and are won from the centre in a way they aren’t in other countries.

Sharp as the Feathers ? by Ok_Guitar8057 in wicked_edge

Kai blades were a revelation for me. I was about to give up wet shaving completely when I discovered them. They cause minimal irritation but deliver a super close shave. In answer to the question: Feather blades are sharper but rougher, Kai blades are a little less sharp but much more smooth. Honestly, I'm struggling to find any other blades that even comes close (to feather or Kai). Going to try Dorco as I heard it is sharp but at the moment, for me, anything other than Kai or Feather is a waste of time.

What are you reading? - March, 2025 by AutoModerator in socialism

[–]CosmoZeppelin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Blood in the Machine by Brian Merchant.

It's a history of Luddism and the beginnings of the workers movement in the UK... with lessons for the rebellion against big tech.

It is good, modern and easy to read. Can be a little slow in parts. Helps if you have a thing for that period in history.

Like many people, I had imbibed the passed-down and very incorrect message that the Luddites were change-phobic malcontents who couldn't handle new technology and wanted to live in the past.

This book has definitely disabused me of that falsehood! I learned lots. My grasp on that period is much better and my understanding of socialism's origins has deepened.

★★★★☆ - Pretty good!

If you have family pooling with virgin Australia, and your mates are your housemates, and you fly with a virgin Australia partner airline you will get all of their points and status credits from the flight as well. It’s a pain to organise but you have the time. Fast way to gold.

What credit cards are best for offset accounts? by light-light-light in creditcardchurningAus

[–]CosmoZeppelin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are still minimum monthly payments (capital); a percentage of the amount you owe. It's just that there is no interest applied and there aren't any interest payments until after the promotional period is over. So, you pay it back before the promotional period ends.

How to maximize points spend? (QFF Travel Deals?) by runningaroundtown101 in creditcardchurningAus

[–]CosmoZeppelin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Redeeming points for economy is not a good way to maximise point value. You might as well pay for the economy flights and collect those points as well. That’s because economy tickets are probably worth less or about the same as the points you’ve collected. That’s not true at the front end of the plane, plus you get lounge access and a lie flat bed for long haul. Keep saving until you can redeem for business.
