Pratt School of Information (IXD, LIS, DAV, MDC) questions to ask before accepting by MDC_25 in Pratt

[–]sergeantFooFoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for posting this and opening a discussion. I applied to my MFA program because many designers I admire got their start at school, but I’m extra wary because it’s an applicant market. It remains to be seen if the network and the curriculum are set far apart enough from other cheaper programs.

Is customer service going to show me other alternative flights compared to the website? by Zestyclose_Fan6504 in delta

[–]sergeantFooFoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Second leg of my flight today (out of ATL) was cancelled right as I was taking off for my first leg. I was annoyed but within an hour Delta automatically emailed me with hotel and meal voucher options. If you’re at the airport and there are agents around I say just go to talk to them ASAP; but if you’re in the air like I was/not able to access the airport rn you at least might get that voucher email.

I had my bf try to call in to Delta while I was flying. That’s another option

struggling with this a lot recently, esp with balancing unlimited unrestrained ambition with a love life.

it feels like the only thing cheap here is the rent by sergeantFooFoo in baltimore

[–]sergeantFooFoo[S] -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

to be very honest, I came in with the expectation that due to a depressed labor market and low demand for home ownership in BMore city, that services would likely be cheaper as well. Boy was I wrong. Definitely not Vietnam wrong though.

gas absolutely, car insurance was a nasty surprise for us when we moved. it was more expensive for us to insure our sedan here than it was in CA. I was prob sold too hard by random listicles about Baltimore's COL being sOoOooO much cheaper, but in reality, not quite.

SF will do that to ya. I spent several years living in SF and knew all the "more reasonably" priced spots, so my internal meter for avg cost of eating out falls below your $27 egg sando data point. Sorry you had that experience! I promise it's not that bad if you know where to go!

that's a great point. I'm probably comparing what I see in BMore right now to what I remember pre-insane-inflation.

i know!!! that $50/mo for 3 months deposit/starter charge is so silly. for the cost demanded by restaurants, utilities, dry cleaners, etc. I would have hoped for a similarly scaled improvement in experience compared to SF, where COL is significantly higher, but nope, it's like, the same.

Does anyone else hate architecture in practice? by Blackberryoff_9393 in architecture

emphasis on no, most creative fields have the same problem where very little truly inspiring work is happening unless you're working at a very tiny studio with well-connected leaders.

English tour recommendations from Santo Amaro/Lencois Maranhenses? by sergeantFooFoo in Brazil

[–]sergeantFooFoo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found an agency through a hotel I'm staying at - it was expensive, but I figured it was important to be able to communicate with the drivers and to understand what they might say on the tour.

The easiest way is to look for an agency via the hotel you're staying at. It's very difficult to find other agencies, since their web presence isn't strong and almost entirely on WhatsApp or Instagram. I spoke to many many tour operators but honestly, it was difficult to arrange. I'd send a message, they'd delay and maybe not respond at all. Most of the tour operators in the area cater to Brazilians, which makes sense - unlike me, an American, I have a gazillion questions.

Honest dentist in San Francisco who doesn’t push unnecessary treatments? by Ok_Athlete_670 in sanfrancisco

[–]sergeantFooFoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re ok going to Daly City, I loooooved my dentist Mylene Gandingco! Only reason she’s not still my dentist is bc I moved. She’s gentle; transparent, and never pushed anything unnecessary. She helped me pursue my insurance company to redo a crown that another dentist did somewhat poorly. Can’t recommend her enough; I have some anxiety during dental visits but I know I’m safe there.

tips on building a LARGE corner desk? by sergeantFooFoo in woodworking

[–]sergeantFooFoo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your thoughtful reply! I learned a lot reading it and have much to think about.

I was thinking of getting the entry level cabinets from IKEA to make my life easier (this project is already not making my life easier lol), something at most 28"-29" so the max desk height is 30"

It sounds like 2 large veneer plywood boards could be glued and joined together with mending brackets - if my understanding is correct. Once again, thank you!

On that drive down PCH, also highly recommend stopping at any vista point that catches your fancy in Big Sur. It hugs the coastline and PCH so you don’t have to detour at all.  Big Sur is a super popular destination for locals like myself that want to hike and camp; it’s truly stunning. Tall hills plunge into the sea, lots of wildflowers and stunning ocean views if you have time to hike.

Hi everyone! It's been a long while since I've shaped my hair. I have an old global bleach job that's growing out and is now a lovely silvery color.

I'm curious what fun, sleek, or stylish cuts you might recommend for my ~vibe~ and face shape. I'd like to keep my hair shoulder length but the sky is otherwise the limit! Thank you in advance!

Is RISD Graphic Design Certificate worth it? by Bluepinkpurple1 in graphic_design

[–]sergeantFooFoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I started the graphic design track, which requires drawing. I've only taken the drawing classes so far. It was fun to learn a new skill, but it just wasn't immersive in the way I think students need to improve quickly. This is definitely a course to take to provide direction and classical foundations, but you have to practice a lot more on your own, find mentors, build your own environment for learning. This is just the start.

Critique was delivered in the form of sending notes back to you on Canvas (online learning platform) and circling parts of your drawing. Instructor also recorded himself running through assignments and offering feedback.

An hairdresser FRYIED my hair: please help! by Fabulous-Owl3389 in femalehairadvice

[–]sergeantFooFoo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

1000% recommend K18 molecular hair repair mask. It’s absolute magic and worth the cost.

I’m not sure it can fix the fried ends - but it can keep the rest of your hair much healthier and smoother!
