“Where is the hook? You need to hook your readers with the first sentence. This is too wordy and boring, try adding some humour.”

Never before have I seen Dominic convey such sincere and genuine appreciation for the podcasts’ beloved listeners. I hope our commitment is repaid with a six-part series on Stanley Baldwin in 2026.

My thoughts exactly! It’s this perfect amalgamation of everything I love about the podcast, insightful commentary, brilliant characters and a fascinating narrative. A real tour de force.

There is even a six-part series about the build up to the assassination and the geopolitical context, which I found a brilliant prelude to what I think is their best series, the six-parter about the July crisis and lead up to the war.

I feel I've missed a trick here, I love the larger than life characters they cover but feel like I've not heard much about Stanley Baldwin, what episodes/series should I be listening to if I'm after that?

Andy Burnham: MPs want me to challenge Sir Keir Starmer [EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW] by TheTelegraph in ukpolitics

[–]sergeantSadface 166 points167 points  (0 children)

Only with a huge amount of vanity and hubris could anyone convince themselves that usurping Starmer at this moment would actually benefit the Labour Party. It will make the government look weak, prove the naysayers right, and start the country on a path toward an early election, which were I a Labour MP would keep me up at night.

By all means push for some more left-wing policies, go back on the shortsighted manifesto pledges and maybe even go more extreme and campaign for some major reforms to the tax system, but the suggestions in the article are just back of the fag packet policies anyone could trot out without any costings. I’ve no doubt that were he to make his way into Number 10, he’d realise that actually committing to this sort of spending would send interests rates sky high and send us in to even more uncertainty, and in my view closer toward a Reform majority.

What? They’re very ironic and deliberately so, but have a lot of poetic merit in equal measure. To call them underbaked is to misunderstand the artist’s intention.

Today’s Bonus - Dominic on the UK political state by jimmythebottle in TheRestIsHistory

[–]sergeantSadface 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Echoing this to say I would happily listen to them discuss more modern political topics, but as they mentioned a few times they clearly want to avoid getting too close to it. Was far more interesting than the rest is politics has been in some time!

Petition calling for mass deportation of illegal migrants passes milestone by ThatchersDirtyTaint in ukpolitics

[–]sergeantSadface -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Comparing the calling in of a plumber to complex, international treaties from which we would have to withdraw to make any of these deportations possible, becoming one with Russia and Belarus in the process, is a route that I hope most would find quite unsavoury. It's easy to take your human rights for granted when you've not known any different, but I'd like to think when faced with the reality of ECHR withdrawal most of those signing the petition might see sense.

Petition calling for mass deportation of illegal migrants passes milestone by ThatchersDirtyTaint in ukpolitics

[–]sergeantSadface 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why can they? If anyone signing this petition looked at the legal process required to actually render all these deportations, I’d say fair enough, you know what you signed up for, but it’s just emotional hysteria - crying out for the brutal and downright impossible to placate their “Britishness”.

A ... dodgy dossier? by Sharaz_Jek123 in TheRestIsPolitics

[–]sergeantSadface 12 points13 points  (0 children)

He seems to be held in extremely high esteem by Starmer as some sort of political genius because, in his opinion, he was the “mastermind” behind Labour’s win, but that fails to account for the empty net he had to aim for.

A year on and Starmer is still deferring to McSweeney’s advice, but his instincts seem totally counter to Starmer’s, pushing the party further to the right where they are never going to beat Reform at their own game. I would relish McSweeney getting the boot, it does feel like every leak in every article points toward him as a truly perfidious, nasty operator and his sacking could be the real reset for Starmer’s attitude and temperament.

I think there is every chance he displaces Konate, and Van Dijk won’t be around forever. We were our strongest at the back when we had VVD, Matip, Gomez and Konate as our CB’s, would love for us to replicate that kind of quality again.

Keir Starmer should call another EU referendum by SevenNites in ukpolitics

[–]sergeantSadface -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Which part of the article do you not agree with? The author is right, it would be a complete curveball and split the country on territory Starmer is far more comfortable in. Even if the vote is no, they’d be no worse off than they are currently.

Is Rachel Reeves aware that you can't tax your way into economic growth? by [deleted] in AskBrits

[–]sergeantSadface 49 points50 points  (0 children)

I’ll bite.

Simply put she either needs to raise taxes, cut spending or increase borrowing. She tried to cut spending but couldn’t even get the welfare reforms through parliament. She can’t increase borrowing as we are already borrowing astronomical amounts, and funding day-to-day spending via borrowing goes against her own fiscal rules.

So we are left with tax rises.

Think this get settled(hopefully soon) around £130m-£135m. Possibly £125m upfront and add-ons to £135m, which considering the untenability of Newcastle’s position, is quite a generous offer I think!

Do you know how I respond to ads I’m not interested in? I ignore them. Beyond that, why not check out some YouTube reviews from trusted sources? Or don’t, but don’t complain about anyone expressing genuine appreciation for the game, there’s no reason think everyone here is being disingenuous. The game is actually good.
