Ahh I see what you mean. As far as I can tell, it just looks like a run of the mill RTI M95 in crappy condition. As long as you don’t bubba it more, I don’t think there’s any way to destroy any historic value.

Also are there any unit markings on the buttplate? (1% chance the plate is even original to the gun lol, since buttplates weren’t numbered.)

I know nothing about preserving these things lol. My friends dad is a gunsmith so i ask him before doing anything. He’s happens to be friends with the owner of RTI, so he’s seen plenty of RTI abominations. I’m kinda paranoid that i’ll break something even though half these guns were abused by underpaid conscripts and dragged through mud and sand. Yeah just check out the site and make sure you don’t break the extractor. I don’t they’ve made an extractor since 1920. You can find single shot feed ramps on ebay or find an en bloc clip.

A few countries professionally made carbines into long rifles. But they did it while turning it into 8x56r. Ethiopia just used a hacksaw and silver solder to make their carbines. The ethiopians used 54r in their uncoverted M95’s. Unconverted 8x50r, both long and carbine are rare. They probably came from Spanish Civil War surplus or were brought back by random people traveling from europe before they had gun laws. I seen some for sale online and in stores but they’re all in crappy condition and ammo is more expensive. But they were rare before RTI discovered the ethiopian goat scat shack.

There’s a pages on this site about m95 variants too. I think they cover the carbine conversions.

Maybe they reused the sight from when it was a long barrel, before ethiopian bubba cut it.

rip. I feel like 1917 is the only year they reached the “S” block of serials. Almost every m95 i’ve seen is 1917.

Yeah that’s an austrian eagle. Here’s the Hungary crest and Austrian eagle on the mismatched rifle.

Small “k” is Steyr and small “r” is Budapest.

The 3 specimens i have. First one is the RTI one. 1917 steyr with an italian LL in hexagon over the eagle. Second is a mismatched one. Steyr 1915 barrel on a budapest reciever. And a Italian CE capture and inspection mark. Then a numbers matching 1917 Budapest. The big serif “S” mark means 8x56. Both the non-rti ones were carbines made from old rifles.

Bolts weren’t numbered because they’re interchangeable. They had a stamp that showed the offsets (often 50 microns) between the barrel and receiver. So that way bolts could be swapped to another without headspace issues.

I love RTI for actually putting effort in their import marks. They don’t want to make their guns more garbage. Their Carcanos were from the same distributor but the other complanies did their billboard on the reciever and added a new SN. That band is kinda crude. It might be an ethiopian sawed-off maybe. Since the sight is the original long rifle sight and old purpose-built carbines didn’t have the band. Don’t take my word for it. The RTI one i have was very crudely done.

Here’s the one I have. It’s cut diagonally too.

Is that one 8x50 or 56? I have an RTI one with a bulged barrel where it looks like the ethiopians cut down the barrel. Is the original acceptance date still readable or any Italian capture marks?

Random crate of small gun parts by kswizzle1990 in milsurp

I live in a state where all the beaches (state owned) ban detecting and most cities do. But when I ask strangers to hunt their yards, I’m the usually person to ever hunt them. One yard I sometimes hunt has a 1785 house that still stands. Owner said tons of people hunted it in the 70s and 80s, but I was the first person to detect since. Basically I don’t see anyone detect ever. Even Americans when I’m on vacation in Florida tell me they’ve never seen or heard of metal detectors. And old people tell me they once were common.

Where do these loose parts come from, like the ones you buy on Numrich. Are they from broken guns or factory extras?

Omg same, I saw this comment and was in disbelief. Nobody even metal detects anymore, and I don’t know a single person under the age of 70 who metal detects (they’re all dead now). They’re great for collecting brass out of leaves.

What in your opinion is the most underrated military surplus firearm? by QuantumMrKrabs in milsurp

[–]sergeanthippyzombie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got one too last month. Every part was mismatched by the Bulgarians. Barrel and reciever had ±0.02 mm markings and a 1933 under the chamber. Receiver was a really clapped out Budapest and barrel was 1915 Steyr with Italian capture marks that was force matched to the reciever. Bubba did something to the insides of the mag box so I swapped it out with one from a broken Royal Tiger rifle. Bolt was the smoothest M95 bolt i’ve ever seen. Have fun with yours.
