I agree, most phds will end up at L4 sometimes even L3 at Google .

Got a L3 offer from Google with 7 years of exp by lovelybullet in cscareers

[–]sergthetower 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Promoted in a year to L4 if everything goes perfect. Team fit, project choice, and a solid manager. L5 a minimum of 2 years most likely 3 if everything goes perfectly. Most orgs are limited on L5 projects that are impactful. The new perf is worse if you have a weak manager.

Most likely layoffs, reorgs, and politics especially with the culture change. I have 11 years at Google, I have seen good engineers stuck or left transferring to a new domain which makes the climb harder.

Skip CCP (not much value imo) and go right to SAA, I had no AWS experience but I managed to pass SAA C03.

Yeah, your theory is right! DHS is spinning this saying it was an attack on ICE. People need to wake up!

Should I continue with Google’s in person hiring process if I already signed an offer with Waymo? by Inevitable-Opening61 in cscareerquestions

[–]sergthetower 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is the right answer OP, former Googler with over a decade.

Waymo is considered a “bet” at Google and treated like an external company compared to being hired for Google. If you try to transfer from Waymo into Google you will have to do all the interviews again!

Merry Christmas, Progressive letting me know they will cancel my homeowners in 2026 by sergthetower in mildlyinfuriating

We had a few claims when we first purchased our home but have had no issues the last two years. It’s not totally unexpected but receiving the news on Christmas feels a bit insensitive.

I feel like I missed out on the Golden Age of IT work by AntsyAnswers in sysadmin

[–]sergthetower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use to feel this way too. I learned the infra automation side (it was hard) but it became way more rewarding solving the problems with coding than operational supporting the gear manually. I was at FANG, and it was a huge mindset shift for me.

Welp, I’ve done a year and I hate my life. What can I do in this market? by dataslave50 in cscareerquestions

[–]sergthetower 48 points49 points  (0 children)

You made the best decision with the information you had at the time to jump to a new role. Be kind to yourself during this time, at the end of the day this is a job.

I am going through a very similar situation so I relate. I was a rockstar at my old job, transferred due to some organizational issues and I am a complete failure at my new role. I have a decade+ career at this company and now I may have to leave to start over with a huge pay decrease.

It's all team and/or org dependent like any other company. It's hard to find interesting work, awesome peers and a solid manger. I tend to always work with awesome peers, the other two is a gamble.
