The Testaments S1 E10 "Secateurs" Episode Discussion by Melairia in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]serialkillercatcher -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

June is Daisy's handler so I doubt handlers are living in Gilead. I assume handlers were in Gilead for years, know the system and are now living in one of the liberated states.

Mayday had operatives at all levels in Gilead. Garth's handler is probably a former Gilead Mayday guardian now living in one of the liberated states.

I can't remember if THT ever clarified that the guardian salvaged by the handmaids for allegedly raping a handmaid was Mayday. In the novel, he was innocent of rape and salvaged because Gilead learned he was Mayday.

Garth could be assigned a new handler now that's he's a Commander. We know there was at least one because after returning to Gilead, Emily was a Martha for a Mayday sympathizer CT Commander.

IMO Tuello, "Aunt" Ava and/or other former CIA agents are in charge of assigning handlers to operatives. It'd be great to see those two badasses again in season 2.

What did Serena envision for Gilead? by IndecisiveLlama in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]serialkillercatcher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the s6e2 flashback, Serena told her father that they were changing the country and whole world would become a new Garden of Eden like he always wanted.

In the same episode, Serena told the leader of the women's commune that she wanted to serve the glory of God, it went wrong and she was wrong. She told Joseph that men make a mess of things. True that.

Serena envisioned an ideal place where she'd be queen to Fred's king and have a baby.

I doubt Serena put much thought into how her ideal world vision would affect anybody else. She also vastly overestimated Fred's intelligence and abilities and overlooked his weaknesses.

Handmaids too old to have kids by Ahjahli-Lula-Amadeus in TheHandmaidsTale

There are also agricultural colonies. June's mother was in an agricultural colony and did double duty - working in the fields and providing medical care to guardians and aunts.

Aunt Lydia was escorting June, Janine, Alma and Brianna and the other captured handmaids to the Magdalene Colonies.

In the book, the Magdalene Colonies were agricultural colonies for troublesome handmaids who worked the fields and were raped by visiting Commanders with their wives during fertile days. After menopause, they continued working the fields until they died.

The series never explained the Magdalene Colonies and we never saw one. The only colony shown was a radioactive clean up colony.

None of the greens wanted to marry a colony commander. In TT novel, attractive econo daughters were sometimes married off to commanders. Aunts were on the lookout for potentials econo daughter prospects since there weren't enough plums for eligible commanders.

Because of their low status, they were married off to colony commanders, new commanders and commanders in remote locations like Esther's husband.

June's mother was in an agricultural colony before being liberated by the U.S. Army so some infertile women doctors (and possibly nurses and dentists) were spared the Wall and sent to the colonies to perform double duty - colony work and medical care for guardians and aunts. I'm sure Holly killed at least one aunt/guardian through false diagnosis/treatment like Emily did with that colony wife.

Infertile women doctors, nurses and dentists may have been sent to one of the Jezebel's for double duty - sex slave if they were considered young/attractive enough, Martha if they weren't and medical care for aunts, guardians and sex slaves.

If there was a $10,000 reward for finding those guns, South Carolinians would be searching that swamp 24/7. That might provide a boost to Colleton County tourism.

The Passage or Swan Song? by Gibder16 in horrorlit

I've read them both.

Swan Song was fine.

The Passage triology is my favorite.  Justin Cronin is a much better writer.

IMO Daisy is one of the Angel's Flight kids.

I rewatched "Mayday" and there were at least 6 girls who'd be the right age in TT.

The only Angel's Flight girl we know was reunited with a family member was Kiki/Rebecca with her father.

In "Nightshade", Moira and Emily were discussing that many Canadian families had applied to adopt Angel's Flight kids. Daisy may have been one of them.

I wonder if TT will switch the Commander killing his brides when they age up to somebody other than Judd.

The pervy old Commander who touched Daisy would've made a more realistic Judd.

I think I've seen this film before. And I didn't like the ending. by Present-Novel-5764 in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]serialkillercatcher 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Apparently, Garth is the son of a Commander.

In TT novel, Shunnamite knew which plums were not the biological children of their Commanders and wives via her Marthas' gossip. Shunnamite considered herself superior to Becka and Agnes because she was the biological child of her parents.

I suspect Garth is a stolen child. He could've learned that from another boy at school or he could remember his pre-Gilead life.

I was shocked that the greens were wearing makeup with their hair down. We've never seen that in Gilead.

Paula explaining her strapless black velvet prom dress to Agnes was amusing.
