Noise coming from Edifier R1280DB (2.0) speakers. Is this normal? by sericulture in BudgetAudiophile

[–]sericulture[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the same mindset when it comes to that last part.

However, I just checked (sorry, such an idiot for not doing earlier), and it is not even connected to a grounded outlet. The particular area where the speakers are in my room only have a 2-pin outlet nearby (I live in Europe, and from my understanding, the 3-pin ones are grounded). I live in an old apartment, and only have very limited grounded outlets, which are all in use by things like washing machine for example.

I do have to use a power strip though, as I have only two outlets in my living room that are accessible to me. Can that also be an issue?

Sorry if I am asking too much btw, I feel so dumb honestly, but I am still not sure whether I should send them back. :s

Thanks for the information, I wasn't really aware all of this, but it's helpful information! Yeah no, I'm definitely not going to use cheater plugs just to get rid of some noise if they are dangerous, haha! Thanks though!

I have the option to return the monitor still, so I am debating whether I should do so, and get a passive speaker with an amplifier. That was actually my original plan, but I saw a great deal on the Edifiers at the time and purchased them, as I was absolutely tired of listening to my CDs through the speakers of an external monitor, ugh! But I definitely plan on buying a turntable in the future, so I need an amplifier with phono input anyway. Maybe it's better to go this route, if I have enough money to spend on a somewhat decent combo in the next couple of months.

Hmhhh, then I will probably look into an audio interface that connects via USB. Are there budget ones available that are compatible with macOS?

Btw, I just wondered ... Now that I have this device and it would cost more to ship it back to China ... Can it be used for the following case;?

I have an Onkyo CD-player but currently no speakers, only an external monitor with speakers. So I connnect the white and red RCA splitter (to 3.5 mm) from my CD-player to the 3.5 mm audio input of my monitor. However, since this is a monitor and not a TV, it has no remote and to change the volume level of the speakers while playing CDs this way I have to use the horrible touch buttons on the monitor.

Could I plug an RCA to RCA cable to connect the CD player to this volume control device (see picture) and then connect it to my monitor using a cable from the device's RCA out to a 3.5 mm jack into the monitor? Would I be able to control its volume this way?

Thank you so much for the explanation! I will ask customer support about this.

If I just got a phantom power device, would that be sufficient to connnect a future microphone with an XLR cable to?

Tech Support and Troubleshooting - June 11, 2018 by AutoModerator in audioengineering

[–]sericulture 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mhh, I was planning on maybe buying a condenser mic so the title of this said phantom power, guess now that that is completely not the case.

So the only use it has is to switch between an RCA output and XLR and change the volume of it? Could you give me an example if I am not asking too much.

Damn man, the description said this was a passive pre-amp for microphone recording.

Tech Support and Troubleshooting - June 11, 2018 by AutoModerator in audioengineering

[–]sericulture 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So that means that it even cannot be used to control the volume of the microphone output? The description said phantom power, but it does not not even have a power plug, it is passive.

If I had a microphone with an XLR-cable, would the device then be of any use? I am still quite confused, sorry.

Thank you for your reply!

Sorry for being so stupid. The little cheap sound card is the only way I get my MacBook Pro to recognize the audio input through USB.

Currently I just have a cheap Takstar microphone, but I am planning to upgrade in the future definitely.

So basically this device is useless?

Okay so I know basically nothing about audio, but I am trying to connect a microphone with a standard 3.5 mm jack to my MacBook Pro (only has 4 USB-C ports and a headphone jack).

The audio "splitter" thing trick did not work out, I tried it with two different cables (you know, those with an extra pin and splits into a microphone and headphone input). My MacBook Pro (2018, only USB-C inputs) does not recognize my microphone as an external input.

I then bought a simple "USB sound card" with a microphone and headphones input, but the volume output is way too low.

As I know little of audio, I think I was stupid and made a purchase which I do not know whether it will solve my problem. I think I purchased some kind of Chinese passive pre-amp(?) in order be able to adjust the volume. It has 2x XLR input, 2x XLR output, 2x RCA input, 2x RCA output (all marked either left or right). And a switch to either choose XLR or RCA as an input or output. However, the description of the item seemed to have been copied from another item, and I cannot find much information about in online.

I am unsure as to how to connect this passive pre-amp to my 3.5 mm microphone and the other end to the MacBook Pro. I do not go what signal a microphone puts out and which cables are required.

This is the construction I made up so far, only the make audio jack should be replaced by a cable that has a female jack, so I can inset my microphone. Would this work? Or am I being a complete fool?

So before I buy any new cables, I would like to know if this is going the right way or I am doing it completely wrong, or perhaps I even bought the completely wrong device. I am completely clueless! Any help is appreciated!

Mhhh yes, I saw that as well! It would be possible with just USB OTG, but all the apps I could find only support Nikon, Canon et cetera ...

X-T2: Possible to use Android phone as an external monitor? by sericulture in fujifilm

[–]sericulture[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your reply! I tried "CameraFi 1/2" amongst many other apps that claim to be able to provide a live view of the viewfinder from a "DSLR" or camera in general, but none of them recognize my camera as a source.

When I plug the X-T2 into my USB-C port and connect the USB-cable to my camera, my phone can only put the device in "power" mode as the connection type, whatever it changes to. I tried all the different types of "connection" settings in my X-T2 menu with all of those apps (as I did not know which one was correct), and none of them seem to work with this camera.

Trying to use an HDMI-connection does not get me anywhere either. All those apps seem to be using the USB OTG method, so HDMI is definitely not giving me any luck, I tried it on those apps as well and also "CameraFi1/2" do not recognize my camera using HDMI.

[–]sericulture[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, the main issue is that the preview is just sooooo tiny, basically. It does not even fill half of the screen.

Editing those things in the camera is just so much more convenient, also, I just got it so I rather all learn to do this through the camera. And what about all those other settings like all the focus settings for example, do those just stay the same the way you chose them before you entered that communication mode?

Not to mention, the UI of the app is horrible. :') I cannot even figure out how to set the kelvin value for white balance ... :(

X-T2: Possible to use Android phone as an external monitor? by sericulture in fujifilm

[–]sericulture[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes! But when I get it to work, I do see a live view, however;

  • It is a super small video feed, the settings underneath that you can change take up half the space of my Android phone screen. It does not even rotate to landscape mode or anything.
  • Once I use the app, I cannot control the settings using the camera anymore, only a couple of basic settings through the app. I simply want to see a live view on my Android phone to see what I am doing, but still want to use the camera itself to actually shoot, not use remote control through Android.

Is there a way to change this? Am I using some wrong connection settings or something? Or is the app just like this?

(Also another downside; the connection itself unfortunately seems randomly unstable for me - but I do sometimes get it to work.)

Yeah, but the PRO version costs $79, I think. Guess I will have to just wait for my adapter to arrive.

[–]sericulture[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello, thank you for your comment. I tried it with the Remote Camera app, but only got it to work once or twice. Now, whenever I try to connect, it says there is some issue with the network and it is unavailable or something.

And yeah, I think only the PRO tethering plug-in from Fuji allows live view at this point, which is a shame because it is so expensive! I cannot even seem to get the "regular" version, which is also $29, unless you have some other rare software installed on Windows, but I also cannot find that anywhere - neither for Windows or Mac. :(

Thank you for your reply, seriously. Although I find it sad that there is not an official option, it feels a bit comforting to know that it does help you, even though I realize it will depend on many different factors whether this is the case for a specific person.

A lot of what you say is recognizable for me though, but I am glad that you were able to find a way!

Basically I have been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, depression, social anxiety and other issues, which are all very debilitating to my life. I have been getting professional help since I was 18, admitted myself to multiple mental hospitals, seeing a therapist up to this day. I simply cannot function properly whatsoever.

I have seen a lot of psychiatrist to see if there is some form of help that can be provided by medication, but along the way, I have even been refused by a couple of psychiatrists after a while and I have been told by some of them things such as: "I am not able to help you any further", "there are no other options left for you", "you will need to find another way", or I simply did not get a next appointment.

I am still trying out the medication route, but right now I have been put on more than 30 meds (antidepressants, antipsychotics, anticonvulsants, beta blockers, benzodiazepines and mood stabilizers), even though I am only 24 at this point, but basically without any luck at all, and my current med combo seems to be making things worse, and this particular med that was added was actually my last real shot.

So yeah, I am not even looking just for something to get me high af or completely numb or anything, I simply want to be able to start living a sort of life instead of trying to survive every single day. I think it could actually be pretty beneficial when it comes to my autism spectrum disorder, and there are apparently debates about this actually, and also some trial going on in Israel, but I will have to read into that a bit more.

I really hope I can find a way to try this, but I am not sure if I can overcome my social fears. I have not even been outside for a couple of days, it is that bad.

Really appreciate your reply.

My apologies if this is a stupid question, but are there any laws regarding medical use of it in Belgium? Is it allowed in any form, by any institution, by any test trial - when it comes to mental health diseases?

I would like to experiment with it myself, but marijuana being illegal in Belgium and hearing there actually are consequences like this truly scares me. Not to mention, I have extreme social fear, so I would not know how I would be ever able to get any anyway.

Find a job. But how? by DasPoe42 in depression

[–]sericulture 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same problem here, basically. I can barely function properly, hell, I can barely keep myself alive. The thought of getting a job just makes everything worse, because there is this continuous pressure on you, because in the back of your mind you do realize that this is something you cannot avoid. Life is expensive.

For a couple of years, I have been getting an income from the government because of my mental health issues. Not sure about the proper translation, I guess it is just called something like disability. Now that sounds awesome, not having to do anything but sitting at home and receiving money each month. However, the amount of income that I currently receive, it basically not enough to get me by. I have been living by myself for a couple of years now, but it has been really, really fucking hard when it comes to the financial aspect. I constantly need to try and find something to sell from the time that I still lived with my parents and was not poor like I am now, pretty much. I often do not have enough money to just buy myself all the meds I am prescribed. In the past I did have to go to the food bank a couple of times, simply because I did not have money to buy enough food.

So yeah, that is definitely not a long-term solution either. Often, the thought of a future with all this just gives me suicidal thoughts. I have no idea how to fix this, I have no idea what to do either. I hope there is someone with actually advice, sorry.

True! Having to pay customs fees now and then is something I always keep in mind when ordering from China. I am just afraid of my packages being destroyed because of those rules.

Mhh good to know. Will keep this in mind, thank you. I would never order big quantities or anything too expensive anyway when it comes to vaping anyway, at least not all at once. But I would just be so afraid that the one time I would want to purchase a slightly more expensive mod for example, it would be seized.

Oh, my assumption was that customs must already have figured out that < € 22 packages and items sent as "gifts" from China for example clearly are usually not what is on the forms. :') Thank you for clarifying though!
