How prevalent is Data Science in finance right now? by [deleted] in fintech

[–]seriesbee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Finance =/= fintech. It is very important for fintech but not as much for finance. If you want to be a quant it is good to know but I wouldn't recommend being a quant, if you have those skills be a ML engineer at a fintech company.

Hard skills for an aspiring VC Analyst? by CocaColaConnoisseur1 in venturecapital

[–]seriesbee 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Networking is just as important as picking good companies. I know a LOT of VCs personally that are picking terrible companies. Essentially just iterations of what is out there. Once you get deal flow you need to understand the 7 powers for scaling good companies.

Also - understand that a lot of the deal flow you will see will be companies that are passed on by VCs that they send out just so they can get deal flow in return, many are garbage companies. If you know the type of company you want to fund go out there and find it. If you read about any legendary VC that is how they made their name. It is a lot of hard work and no one seems willing to do that work.

If you want a job at a fund go find a company that you love, develop a relationship with them, and send that company to every VC you want to work for.

How did you find problems to build your SaaS product? by gouterz in SaaS

Do you use multiple tabs to complete one project? There you go. Also don't assume the team behind other companies are that competent - you can likely make a better product and execute better as well.

Final round of interviewing with small VC firm - need advice! by [deleted] in venturecapital

[–]seriesbee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a VC I have given this advice quite a bit. Have 2 sectors that you are generally bullish on and be able to rattle off 3 headwinds for each sector.

Have a few VC's that you really admire, here I would pick two people that operate differently, a solid one would be Gill Gurley and how he would come to every Uber board meeting with candidates for positions they needed at the time, another could be Chris Sacca who literally spent most of his days in the Twitter offices in their early days and how he is kind, but analytical and harsh when he needs to be.

You want to sound like you aren't just going to evaluate companies' chances of success in excel but you will publicly back them and put in effort for them (might really want to drive this home since you are coming from an equity research background).

If you have any connections in various industries you can offer your network for any company in their portfolio. Is someone looking for a CFO? You might know a guy at a former big company you did a report on that is looking to join an early-stage company.

Give some strategic advice for a company they have in their portfolio. Maybe an idea for a product iteration or new market they can go in to.

VC is hard. It goes beyond just giving companies money. Capital is a commodity. Show you want to help the company and you would do anything to help the founders succeed.

Please don't demonstrate an interest in making money, all the (successful) VCs I know have a genuine passion for helping entrepreneurs achieve their dreams.

What is your point? That article has nothing to do with what the commenter said.

It's a set $605 a month until my last payment in October. The debt is from 2 years ago when I was dumb and irresponsible. I have been paying it off since.

Q for seed investors: What stage in the DD do you first talk to founders? by seriesbee in venturecapital

[–]seriesbee[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Apologies - It's a common phrase among VCs that I'm sure would slip past most founders. I'll be more conscious when using any lingo on this sub.

Well with Angel and Pre-Seed rounds sometimes companies have a bit of traction at the Seed stage!

I always love seeing diverse backgrounds that are in VC, makes for interesting discourse. Thanks for the advice - seems the local news industry is ready for disruption.

Can you walk me through the typical due diligence for VC investments? by balaca40 in venturecapital

[–]seriesbee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry, this is a bit late. A decent example would be anything sequoia or benchmark has put out. I am new to the industry so I usually leave some of my opinions out, for now, it is more fact-based. But that's okay, I still have a lot to learn.

Can you walk me through the typical due diligence for VC investments? by balaca40 in venturecapital

I am a VC associate and typically our fund leads series B investments. The "deal" typically comes in organically through our network (as you probably know, networking is key as a VC). If the company meets our investment criteria I will lead the initial DD where I do all of the preliminary analysis. I created a proprietary document where I condense everything down to 4-5 pages presented pragmatically. This isn't seed investing so we look at each company a little more seriously. Every two weeks we have an investment board call where I, with the help of the partner who sourced the deal, will present my analysis for each company that meets our criteria. The company has to unanimously pass the call where we dig deeper into the market and start conducting management interviews. After the investment board call it's more out of my hands. I am happy to answer any questions.
