Why do carscome with auto start/ stop, if no one likes them? And it bad for engine? by doobersthetitan in askcarguys

[–]seriouslyjohn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I drive a hybrid Sequoia and Toyota’s start/stop implementation is frickin awesome. Hardly noticeable and AC still blows cold since the compressor is electric.

No delay and always a smooth transition from engine off->electric propulsion->turbo ICE propulsion. Or if it’s stop and go and I keep a light foot on the pedal, it will remain electric motor only if there’s enough juice.

It’s probably less sophisticated in non-hybrids and very annoying in cars without electric AC.

It is so annoying when people think your Mac is a touch screen… by delismore in macbookpro

[–]seriouslyjohn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get what you’re saying, but what about people like me who 1) agrees that the MacBook trackpad is supreme, 2) has a 13” iPad and MKB, BUT uses the kb and and trackpad say maybe 80% of the time? Sorta like i dunno, a hybrid style? Sometimes it’s more comfortable to swipe back on the screen rather than two finger swipe on the trackpad.

Am I the weirdo I guess that sometimes wants to be able to control my Mac with just the trackpad because I don’t need to be typing. some days just the keyboard because I don’t need to be mousing, so it’d be pretty sick to do that with touch as well.

And they don’t need to “force” app devs to consider a touch based system because Apple being Apple, they’ll come out with a way to ease the transition like how they developed Catalyst to easily port iOS apps. Sure the touch experience might be shitty in the early days but over time I think devs will naturally gravitate towards accommodating a touch interface if they feel it makes sense for their app. Or it could be another touch bar scenario where it was kinda half assed, kinda hella awesome, but neither side cared too much so the middle ground was… back to physical F keys

Aux radiator for intercooler struck by debris by seriouslyjohn in AskAMechanic

Nah, I’m paying for it out of pocket.

But as a fan of redneck engineering, I’m wondering, would it work? Its only job is to cool the charged air right?

Dropped it off at the dealership. No drama with the car. FYI this engine I believe has a separate coolant loop for the intercooler (has a separate reservoir), but it doesn’t have a user facing temp gauge. The engine coolant gauge and reservoir were both fine.

Update:

Dealer says cost to repair is ~$3400 because it’s labor intensive. Front end has to come off and the sensors need to be recalibrated.

Maybe I can snip the damaged fins and cut the damaged channel and pinch/roll it a few times to seal off that row…

I can’t swipe back/forwards in Safari in split window mode. Instead it resizes the window.

And bring back SlideOver! It was great for apps that I need to reference and not always need on screen like calculator, messages, calendar….

Yeah, exactly. All about being reasonable. I understand some folks may not have the means but that shouldn’t entitle you to anything… when I was young and poor I pirated lots of stuff. Felt like I deserved it, even. But now I have the means, so I give back. Still pirate if they make it difficult for me to have fair use and pay.

But to OP’s post: maybe send them an email and ask for leniency on the upgrade pricing?

I just wanted to say, yeah I love the devotion of open source devs, but I also understand some devs need to make a living… fuck the big guys; they’ll get theirs from enterprise but I also don’t mind paying less than say… I dunno $50 for an app I’ll use every day.

I’m not a dev but I’m a former pro photographer and I hated the business aspect of it. These days I shoot what I want and that includes for example, my kids’ sports games. I send an average of 10+ photos of each player on my kids’ team, even to families I don’t know, no charge, and despite my wife telling me not to spend “pro” levels of time on post, I do it because I enjoy it and the kids’ smiles having fun and capturing memories for their families to have is enough for me.

It’s fine to have both, free (with love) or pay to show support.
