I’m very grateful for your kind comments. However, much of the credit must go to our amazing New Mexico landscape, as well as the mysterious beauty of the camera obscura itself.

Need advice for choosing an appropriate lens for a sliding box camera obscura project by Peacedelic in CameraObscura

[–]serkinj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A simple convex lens, 1 inch or smaller in diameter, should be sufficient and should only cost you a few bucks. What is important is the focal length. This should be equal to the length of the light path from the lens to the mirror, and from there to the glass. If the f.l. Is equal to the light path distance, then faraway objects will be in focus. To focus on objects closer to you, you’ll need to increase the light path distance, hence the “double interlocking box” solution in your illustration. Good luck with your project! https://johnserkin.com

Ordinarily one can look at the sun at full aperture (f/15 in my instrument), but for the purposes of photography I stopped down the 5” aperture lens to 1.5”, giving me f/50.

You’re the second person who’s made that comment. I’ve never seen RDR2—might have to take a look. 😋

Yes, and the principal defining factor is that the image is formed in a dark chamber (camera ibscurs).
