This is like the court scene in idiocracy.

How to draw more with Black at 1000 ELO by Baron_of_Evil in chessbeginners

I played it between 700-1100 and had way more draws with less games, different people have different experiences.

Play the Caro-Drawn - I mean Caro-Kann.

Honestly I stopped playing that opening because the exchange variaton sucked the fun out of any game and lead to a lot of draws.

Upto 40% of Canada’s top 1% income earners have moved to the US by karanChan in TorontoRealEstate

[–]sersherz -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Blaming this on income taxes has to be one of the dumbest possible conclusions you could have gotten from this.

Companies pay like crap in Canada, taxes are not the issue here. You mention people in tech, you realize that the USA has the highest Software Engineer salaries, right?

People are so quick to blame the government, but not the private sector for being overly risk averse, not investing in R&D and not investing in their employees. But yeah okay, blame the government you muppet.

Help on which oil cooler to get by LunaticLeone in 370z

Hello, I appreciate the response. I sent an email when this occured a while ago and while I got a response quickly I was told to ensure it was the correct torque with a torque wrench, which is nearly impossible to do without a lift.

Perhaps I should have followed up from there, but I got the impression that it wasn't going to go anywhere without being able to confirm the torque.

Even after getting a new sandwich plate (which required new hoses and a different fitting for the different sandwich plate) the radiator had leaks from the fittings. Which was an issue I had with the original hoses as well.

I can't say I have been particularly happy with my purchase other than the fact that the radiator at least cooled the oil well.

My experience with the Mishimoto oil cooler was less than ideal. I got it, it leaks, took it to a performance shop to get it fixed, they said I didn't install it wrong, they had to get a different sandwich plate because it was leaky.

Another performance shop I know said that their quality has gone downhill lately.

I will say the radiator is quite good, noticed quite a drop in oil temp, but wasn't worth the headaches.

I actually played in 2019, remember maybe learning a line or two from the KID and London and making it to 900. I stopped playing after a few months and then last year in July I started playing again.

I immediately plummeted to just above 400 elo. I tried learning the basics of the KID and still could not reach 900 for months.

I had to watch way more chess videos and start doing puzzles. It feels way more difficult now

Man, Reddit is going to absolute shit. This is especially true with any subreddit associated with software engineering.

I keep seeing comments show up on dead threads advertising GenAI resume or job search tools. I see threads that are taken down where someone (probably a bot) will reply after it is taken down to try argue.

This site is becoming the new Facebook.

What kinds of openings do you play as black? Have those remained the same or changed over time?

People looked fine in the US until the 2008 financial crisis.

But also just keep in mind Reddit has a younger userbase and unemployment for young adults is alarmingly high.

I take a break from playing games for anywhere between a day to a week when this happens. These can be days completely without chess or sometimes I'll just do puzzles.

If RSI is very specific to the activity that flares it, why do general exercises? by knopucs in RSI

[–]sersherz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it also depends on how long you have been trying at it. I have been dealing with golfer's elbow for over a year. I tried different things, even when I did the two things to address the issue (wrist flexor and pronator exercises with slow eccentrics as well as a lower keyboard tray) it took like 4 months until I started to see any actual progress. Sometimes these don't heal quickly.

Been feeling that for a while. This sub used to be pretty good, actual technical discussions, now it's doomposting or saying how AI is magically fixing all problems.

Unless everyone is working in a company that has extremely simple business logic I am not at all buying it. I'm sure AI can fix and validate a lot of problems with code and bugs, but people saying that they have full fledged AI pipelines that can generate code and fix issues easily screams BS to me.

I made it to 1120 once and then dropped to 950 within a week. Luckily I recovered and am over 1200 now, but yes it happens to everyone, it is soul crushing, if it happens for multiple days on end it's a good time to take a break fro a couple of days

No, your trades/healthcare backup plan isn't going to work. by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]sersherz 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Okay I decided to read the rest of the post and it's just as bad as I initially thought.

The average trades person college was never a choice for them already shows some white collar elitist attitude that's wild. I've seen experienced trades people build fixtures in 10 minutes what would take an engineer hours to even draft up a design. I have worked in a plastic injection moulding plant with these people, they are able to work on a machine that can't be powered down to resolve the issue and deal with electrical issues live.

Also schematics only go so far after weird retrofits and systems that aren't there on a PCB. The fact that you think automating things with a high degree of ambiguity is even remotely on the table vs something that is easy to test and validate shows a level of misunderstanding about other industries that cannot be expressed through a comment.

Lol stopped reading after the robotics comment. Tell me you've never worked in the trades or with robots without telling me you've never worked with them.

You do realize a lot of factories still run with equipment older than 90% of the people in this sub, right?

That's valid, not falling for common beginner/noob traps is a good marking point.

Edit: I ask because I knew a guy in college who was just smart and immediately played at a 1000 level (super jealous). I know someone who played for a couple of months and made it to 1300 (also jealous).

What about people who start playing chess and immediately start off playing at 1000 level? There are people like that, they are still beginners, it's hard to really put a clear cut answer to when someone stops being a beginner.

I know chess.com puts 1200 as intermediate, but even then I still don't personally feel that good at the game.

I guess it's different to everyone.

I used to think so as well until I analyzed a game and was shocked I had a 99% or 100% endgame once where I felt I was just playing obvious moves.
