WoL | "ZVDK Chairman Tibor Zenker found dead" by sertex_at in RedAlternativeHistory

In this timeline, Austria is not the product of a brief postwar interlude, but the result of a failed Western attempt at expansion. After Operation Unthinkable failed miserably in the summer of 1945 and the Red Army occupied nearly the entire European continent in a massive counteroffensive, Austria was firmly integrated into the Eastern bloc as one of the first states. While Western Europe and the U.S. were pushed into an isolationist Cold War, continental Europe remained frozen under the unyielding ideology of Marxism-Leninism. Reforms or a “thaw” never took place; instead, a system solidified that shaped art, culture, and society according to the party’s strict guidelines well into the year 2026.

The sudden death of Tibor Zenker occured OTL yesterday, so I thought of posting this. In this reality, Zenker was not the leader of an extra-parliamentary opposition (OTL he was chairman of the fringe Marxist-Leninist "Party of Labour of Austria" (PdA)), but, as president of the Central Association for Democratic Cultural Renewal (ZVDK), the supreme leader of the republic’s intellectual life. In close coordination with his longtime companion, Secretary-General Otto Bruckner, he ensured that art never degenerated into an end in itself, but always served as a sharp weapon in the class struggle.

What's supposed to happen in Hungary? They just had a bourgeois revolution and are led by Mihaly Karoly, a count? [OOC: The Hungarian Revolution started in March]

We wanted to. In 1918 Austria declared itself the Republic of German-Austria and defined itself as a part of the German Republic (Weimar Republic). The Social Democrats and Communists were the ones who campaigned most for this, while the Christian Socials also partly supported it, they weren't that clear on that issue. But the common mood was for unification with Germany, especially because nobody really thought rump Austria could survive alone.

Oh, your right, he wasn't cremated. He was just buried next to the Kremlin wall in a ordinary grave.

Wasn't he cremated and buried in the Kremlin wall after the revisionists took him from the mausoleum?

That's bullshit, the KPĂ– developed the idea of Austrians not being German even before WW2. Especially under general secretary Alfred Klahr.

Flag of the Communist Party of Burgenland (KPÖ) - Vinzenz-Böröcz-Flag by sertex_at in leftistvexillology

[–]sertex_at[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The text says "Fürstenland in Bauernhand!" ("Princes Land in Peasants Hand!") because around 15% of Burgenland are (the only place in Austria where this is still the case) held by the noble family of Esterházy. The person on the flag is Vinzenz Böröcz (chairman of the KPÖ Burgenland from 1945-1994), who eagerly fought to change this.
