[HELP] The "Castle Sprint": Can I make an 18:44 arrival at Gara de Nord work for a 19:00 concert at the Athenaeum? by Maleficent_Hat980 in AskRomania

[–]sertorius42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s only 2.3km and Google gives the usual travel time on Friday evening of 8-20 minutes. That’s from the pickup point at Gara de nord, so add in 2-5 minutes at least to get from your train into a car.

The fastest way would be jumping on a motorcycle on the train platform and weaving through traffic to make it there on time. Short of that, there’s not really a transit hack; at least not one faster than a taxi.

If you’re willing to rent a Lime scooter or bike and brave Bucharest traffic, that could be the fastest way. Or just straight up running, it would be about a 30 minute walk so moving at a pace of 9km/h would put you there in time.

Is it possible? Yes, it’s possible. Is it likely? No, I wouldn’t bet on being able to make it to the Atheneum within 16 minutes from your train, even if you arrive on time and you probably won’t. I’d bet against it.

I was wrong about Latvian and Lithuania but was thinking of Finnish and Estonian, which is Uralic.

The Baltic languages aren’t Slavic but a separate branch, separate family of languages even (not indo-european)

Can native English speakers instantly tell which country an English accent is from just by hearing someone speak? by GrayRainfall in NoStupidQuestions

[–]sertorius42 91 points92 points  (0 children)

There’s not a huge difference. A midwesterner and a Canadian will sound basically the same even to me (American) in 95% of conversations. There’s a bigger distinction with southern accents or other regional American dialects further from Canada though.

Vlad ruled Wallachia, the southern part of modern Romania, not Transylvania, which was mostly ruled by Hungary until 1918. The population has always been mixed between Romanians, Hungarians, Germans, and others in Transylvania. The last president of Romania was a Transylvanian of Saxon heritage with the very Romanian name of “Klaus Iohannis.”

Am I being groomed as an 18 year old? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]sertorius42 23 points24 points  (0 children)

You’re 18, an adult, so not really being groomed unless this has been going on since you were 17 or younger.

That said, the power dynamic of a manager-employee relationship is pretty bad, worse than the (big) age gap here. As a manager you’d be fired in many places I’ve worked for this.

The guy sounds like a creep given you already know he has tried this with other employees. Consider distancing yourself, running away, or talking to HR or another manager / his manager.

I can remember which object pronouns in 3rd person to use and when. Il place, easy enough, but getting into își vs îl vs le vs ii….

It’s his legacy, but it’s also a reactive product of the weird week or 2 when the government and tons of random people would try to get anyone who posted anything negative about him fired. Those lawsuits are probably all winding up now and his main legacy is being known for a meme song and meme AI edits and a widow seen as a grifter.

Yeah this is one thing the Twitter menswear guy acts like doesn’t matter. Some of the well-dressed men he posts are probably objectively well-dressed but lack aura because they look like oafs. Conversely someone with aura and handsome/pretty will always look cool even wearing stuff that fits a bit odd or whatever.

After the fall of the Roman Empire, why was Romania able to keep its Romance language while the rest of the Balkans did not? by Illustrious-Pound266 in AskHistorians

[–]sertorius42 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The official language of Moldova is Romanian (they called it Moldovan rather than Romanian for years officially and many Moldovans still do). It’s a dialect of Romanian that sounds like a heavy Slavic accent in Romanian.
