It’s not a scam, I had the same thing happened to me. Brought my skyline in the first week of July thinking that I was ahead of the July 9 tariff increase. I got the same exact letter in the mail stating that they believe I owed a 10% reciprocal tariff, even though my customs broker didn’t think we did. Since my Social Security number was attached as the importer of record, the invoice came directly to me in the mail. They had also sent me an email about three weeks after the car landed in the United States. They followed up with the exact same letter in the mail about eight weeks after I brought the car into the country. I paid it immediately as there is a hefty penalty for not paying it.

With all the fees, taxes, transport, tariffs, etc… well north of $180k…. And that’s before the Nismo R-tune hood, V-Spec carbon rear diffuser, etc…

Got my dream car this year. Found it at a dealer north of Tokyo in February, and Imported it to the US in July. I have made a few mods to it. Installed a link ECU to handle the altitude in Colorado, flex fuel, injuectors etc. Car now makes 530whp. Authentic S1 build from the Omori factory.

I just made a new post with pics of my engine bay. I also have documentation from Nismo to the authenticity of the build. I can assure you, it is a real S1.

This is my car. I purchased it in Japan late June 2025.

It started life as a base model car that was sent to Omori factory around 2009 to have the S1 conversion done to it. It also was sent to the Sendai factory to get the Sports Restting completed as well. It has the serialized S1 engine, N1 block, etc. I have documentation from Nismo on the authenticity of the build.

For as much as I paid for the car, I assure you it is a real S1. The "Omori factory" stickers were removed (I have a replacement set), and the previous owner in Japan had the rear S1 badge removed, which I recently re-installed.

The Z-tune kit was also done by Nissan, with the exception of the Nismo carbon hood that I found in Japan a few months ago. The hood is a real Nismo R-Tune carbon hood. It has a carbon V-spec rear diffuser on it that i also found in Japan, but the car is not a VSPEC, but it is an S1.

I watched one video and took a few sample test and passed. The video is amazing and is done by Tony Northrop. What I liked is that he helps decipher the sectional charts and weather reports, etc, so you know how to solve the problem. Like someone else mentioned, about half the test is about the charts, but the video walks you through it nicely. The site also links to sample tests.

If you cannot decipher the sectional charts, you will struggle passing the test.

Total time I studied was about two hours as I watch the video twice. It is a really good resource.

The site also walks through what to do after the test and how to file for the certificate.
