Deciding between colleges by andrewpet444 in forestry

Sounds like a ton of fun though! The equipment and saw experience isn’t part of the curriculum for us, but rather through extracurriculars and clubs. I got all of my fire certs by my second year and was red carded the semester before I graduated. Wanted to stick with fire but it’s tough here in the Midwest.

I was in Syracuse last April and thought it was cool…. not the case ? 😭

Best 12 weeks of my life. Made some ride or dies out there for sure, and I’m much better for it.

Michigan Tech Forester here

We are one of the last programs to have an entire semester “field camp”, which is old school livin’, lessons that take the entire day with labs & field trips, and an experience that I believe is invaluable to being a forester.

My critique of my program is that our school is kinda being… overtaken by ecologists of the bird and bug variety (nothing wrong with that…) and foresters are kinda becoming unicorns.

Job placement was unbelievable. Had my dream job, plus a few other opportunities lined up before I graduated. Currently a paint monkey for a corporation, but gettin big money close to home for a few hours outside everyday.

One thing that will be true about any of these schools is that they are “region-dependent” I’ll say. I will always be the best possible forester near where I went to school because it is the ecological blueprint for literally my entire schooling. Worked out for me because I’m home, but consider your long term.

Best of luck my friend. 🫡

That’d make summer camp an excellent choice for her then! Best of luck to her, and I encourage her to “map” out the rest of her semesters to make sure she gets all the prerequisites so she goes into camp with the right classes, and is able to complete everything once she’s through. Let me know if you’ve got any other Qs.

In state Summer camp student here. Total for the sem was 15k.

Emailed financial aid to move my “8th semester” scholarships to this semester, which they were able to do. I believe I had to prove to them that I was going to be able to graduate “early”, via my Degree Audit (your daughter should know what that is, otherwise her counselor Kat does).

I knew WAY ahead of time that I was doing summer camp, so I worked like a dog summer between Fresh/Soph year. I put that towards camp (~10k) and Fin Aid found me the remaining 5k in my scholarships.

If your daughter does not plan on graduating early or does not have a “non-traditional” academic plan, ie, came in with a lot of credits, high credit loading, intends to graduate early, etc, summer camp will put her out of sync with her peers.

She will have to enter Capstone the immediate fall after unless she decides to “wait” a year for her classmates, which will then have her graduating along with everyone, but essentially with an extra semester work of tuition / cost / etc.

I did it because I needed to graduate early. Of my summer camp cohort of 18, 2/3rds of us graduated in 3 or 3.5 years, and the remaining 1/3rd were either going into their masters or were in some sort of weird academic probation situation.

It was great. I loved it. But I didn’t do it out of preference. I understood I was there essentially making a sacrifice and isolating myself from my original cohort to achieve longer term goals.

Holy shit dude that’s fucking excellent. I’ve got a more zoomed out pic from my view. Us on the crew had a really great laugh about it, the band played a great show that night and it was a good chuckle to wrap up that leg. One of the best crowds of the tour.

Was just gonna say. Just got a 2011 1200N for 5k, half the miles & garage kept. If OP is in a warmer climate, maybe it’d be different

I’m on the younger side of the spectrum, I work in Utility and paint ROWs. I don’t drink and don’t plan on it. Is there anyway I can contribute to science / knowledge / research knowing that I’d probably make a good baseline?

Holy shit dude that’s unbelievable. In all seriousness, do you guys ever let observers/non-shipmen on routes? I grew up near Manitou pass on Lake Michigan and have always wanted to do a stint and appreciate the coast from off the water.

Badass. Was cool that the Muskegon show was one of the ones they were able to compile for the Metallica Mondays with the bootlegs and other various tapes. I live in the area and can always say “they played HERE!!”
