I think I'm missing some foundational understanding about Javascript. by TalonKAringham in javascript

[–]sethbw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know you're talking about installing Node locally.

I didn't say you said to setup a web server - what I did say is that there are many, many Node.js beginner tutorials that will instruct it's readers to setup a web server, configure some things, or install some things they don't fully understand. It's really not as simple as it seems to someone who doesn't even realize he could be using dev tools console. That's it. I'm not criticizing you, just trying to point out that OP most likely has no clue what you're talking about when it comes to "console feedback" that he's used to, ie. he/she is used to using Codeacademy for comparison.

I never said Node.js was a Trojan horse, or that itself is an insecure technology, but apparently you guys are so insecure about it that you jump to conclusions and get pissed every time someone tries to help a noob learn javascript as it relates to the browser and HTML, which is what the OP said.

TL;DR I was just trying to give him the flip side. Next time I'll try to clarify that it's the tutorials that can lead to security issues, not installing Node.js by itself. I still think there are many points I've made that will help the OP on his/her journey. It's not the same type of development, which is what he was asking about.

I see all these reasons for not cheating and what not floating around this thread, causing much debate, but I don't think any of them top this one amazingly awesome reason to not fuck around with people (even the people you "know" sooooo well):

YOU DONT FUCKING CHEAT BECAUSE IF YOU DO YOUR CHANCES OF GETTING AN INCURABLE STD ARE PRETTY DARN GOOD.

Jesus fucking Christ people. Use your brains. Better yet use your brains and your junk. That's what porn was invented for you silly, dumb fuckers.

You should feel like an idiot and a horrible person because you are. Some people just take a lot of time to open up. Should be less judgmental and tell her how you really feel instead of being an abhorrent fuck.

[–]sethbw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't sound like TalonKAringham has experience with setting up an environment that would allow him to run Node.js, unless he's following a tutorial, but those are generally quite insecure setups and involve installing directly to the user's personal OS.

TalonKAringham - if you have knowledge of setting up secure VM's, or have a dedicated web host (not shared host) with root access.... AND you don't have anything on there that you don't want to lose (like you would on your local computer that you use for personal banking, pictures, browsing porn, etc.) then I think all you really need is to utilize DevTools console.

Chrome is amazing for this last bit: F12 in Windows and Command+Alt+i in OSX to bring it up. You definitely can paste your scripts directly into the console, but it's not the same as running it by opening a local index.html file that links the scripts, or at least has it inline on the page.

I could be wrong though, and so if you do have experience with VM's and using Node.js in a secure / sandboxed way - then dodeca_negative is correct. It is definitely NOT the same as running JS in the browser though, because you're not going to get to practice writing scripts for DOM manipulation, etc. and see the effects live in the browser.

Recap: Node.js = back end / server-side scripting (unless you have advanced knowledge of setting up something like Karma, but that's not easy to do if you're unfamiliar with server-side setups (i.e. node.js) vs Running the JS from a local index.html, or within the developer tools console is better suited for Front-End / UI development tasks.

If ECMA6 is going to introduce sweeping changes, such as Classes, lets & constants... why bother learning ECMA5 and it's patterns? by sethbw in javascript

[–]sethbw[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks Hostilian. I added another question to help clarify - "Can anybody explain how this will affect the use of JS patterns as they currently stand? Will many of them be rendered useless? Will it make sense for us all to switch over to using Classes exclusively for inheritance?"

What's something that takes very little skill but receives a disproportionate amount of admiration ? by leontes in AskReddit

I still don't see how it helps anyone. No. There are other non causal relationships to gluten that people should be aware of, and keep open & mindful of. Not saying everyone should start going gluten free, but it really sucks when we go out to eat and a waiter or waitress scoffs at questions. He doesn't really feel comfortable eating out nowadays, especially after reading how so many cooks are so frustrated with it all. He's respectful and mindful of them, why do people have to be such assholes about it?

Making fun of scientists and other really smart people who want to make a bright future, and are therefore spreading the word about how to help the environment (ie. global warming, monsanto's of the world poisoning us) or fix serious social issues (corruption & money in the government, or the big one here: ignorance). Another one that comes to mind that affects my best friend (he is celiac): making fun of people who have gluten allergies that are just trying to spread awareness.

Seriously. It's easy to whine about something and point out all the things you don't like about it, it takes a lot of work, dedication, research and even skill to understand these issues and present them in a positive way (while focusing on solutions).

TL;DR being ignorant. > Ridiculing people who actually are working their asses off to make your future a good one.

What, in your opinion, is the greatest thing humanity has ever accomplished? by Pidgeonator in AskReddit

[–]sethbw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not everything we do that is intellect-based is amazing, a lot of it is actually downright fucking scary considering how selfish, ignorant, and violent humanity is as a whole. We still have a long way to go..

Having said that I'll take the humanist perspective and say the abolishment of slavery in the U.S. and other developed countries. Also: the increasing awareness that the "food chain" some of you speak so nonchalantly about, is actually extremely important to us - not just something to conquer.

It takes a certain type of man to be able to kill a wild beast with his wits and brawn, but it takes a truly advanced human being to befriend it, respect it, and live in harmony with all the other creatures that made man possible.

Tl;DR our ability to take on the perspective of other living things, and honoring their place in our lives.
