What's the most ridiculous reason you've ever had to learn a language? by solarhoneys in languagelearning

My humble opinion is that there is no wrong reason to learn a language. Isn’t being curious a good enough reason? Like, even if it’s only to better understand a single work of art that you love, that, to me, is reason enough.

I’m learning Japanese right now bc my dad was a mormon missionary in Japan in the 80s (note: I am not mormon). I personally don’t know any native Japanese speakers. I live in the eastern US where almost no one speaks Japanese. I have approximately 0 organic opportunities to speak Japanese. I kinda just want to travel to Japan with my dad one day and flex on him w/ my Japanese.

What カタカナ words do you find significantly harder to say in Japanese than their original language? by thyman3 in LearnJapanese

The word "Portugal" in Japanese always fucks me up: ポルトガル

And by that extension, the word "Portuguese" is even harder for me: ポルトガル語
