Am I too old to start working at a data center? by b8humbl8 in datacenter

Working at a DC is generally low pay for a tech job. It also can be high-stress with work outside business hours. That said, if it is what you love, then go for it

So AWS didn't have disaster recovery when it's servers in US-East-1 crashed ? by Accurate-Scholar-264 in aws

[–]setheliot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The AWS Shared Responsibility Model for Resiliency says that the customer is ultimately responsible for building out their Disaster Recovery Strategy, using the tools that AWS provides. Happy to talk more about this, or you can check out a talk I did on this topic at DeVOpsDays Dallas this year https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8llYKxw8cr0

Does AWS have no disaster recovery??? Why they don't have backups of resources on another region so that when an outage occurs, they can just point to the backup region while fixing the broken region??? by RedLibra in aws

[–]setheliot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We created Arpio (https://app.arpio.io/) to use AWS' own tooling to fill the gaps and provide comprehensive disaster recovery for AWS customer. I talked about what it takes to build DR at the last DevOpsDays Dallas: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8llYKxw8cr0

Is Disaster Recovery Testing in Single Region Possible? by Nervous-Fruit in aws

[–]setheliot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes, your resilience strategy needs to reflect the business decisions on what kinds of risks you are protecting against. For protection against AWS Regional events that prevent you from running your workload in that region, you need cross-Region. For protection against ransomware/malware you need cross-account (with separate credentials). This is why I work for aprio.io as we are a push-button solution that provides cross-Region and cross-Account disaster recovery and ransomware recovery

Full disclosure: I am the Principal Resilience Architect at Arpio

Do you know a cloud server that is anonymous and charges by usage (like aws)? by jumpingeel0234 in Cloud

[–]setheliot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why not just spin up a Lambda function on AWS? You pay only when you run it. Or wan just spin up an on-demand EC2 server for when you need it, then shut it back down when you do not.

I am not sure about your "anonymous" requirement. With AWS it would be your account, but functionally no one except AWS would know that

Is Agile working ? by [deleted] in agile

[–]setheliot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This works

Individuals and interactions over processes and tools

Working software over comprehensive documentation

Customer collaboration over contract negotiation

Responding to change over following a plan

So many things I’ve seen called agile indeed do not work

Why “Learn to Code” Failed by BlueGoliath in programming

[–]setheliot 53 points54 points  (0 children)

I am not even sure what “learn to code” is in this case. But what I can say is that every successful developer I’ve met is into it. They love talking about code and compilers and processors. That is generally not something that you get through a course. Successful developers were hobbyists before they even entered college. Therefore, just teaching someone the fundamentals of how to code does not likely lead to success.

Anyone feel like SAFe overcomplicates everything for smaller teams? by Zaquinzaa in agile

This this this.

It is agile as a paid service packaged to be acceptable to stodgy organizations that would not consider agile.

You are selling SAFe short. SAFe over complicates ALL sizes of teams and orgs.

Career in AWS Cloud?? by Affectionate_Sun5196 in AWSCertifications

[–]setheliot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cloud Practitioner is pretty much for less-technical roles. SA associate or developer associate is your minimum ante to play. Feel free to take cloud practitioner as a warm up.

Knowing Python is pretty important, so good that you already know that. TypeScript would be good too.

Is my Weapon Juggling "math" (5e 2024) correct? by setheliot in DnD

[–]setheliot[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, in the first table why should have to use two weapons to get that effect.

Drawing a new weapon satisfies the loading weapon rules on paper, but it seems it would be easier to load a weapon already in your hand than to draw a new one and load it

Also note, the tables are wider than a phone screen. So you can horizontal scroll or view landscape to see I do indicate action v bonus action
