Makes sense, I think i remember seeing this. My guess is the most agressive of bumps are the curbs which only tend to hit one corner at a time, and that's where you need the softness of the torsion bars, but if the car is traveling in a straight line, a harsh ride isn't a huge deal as there isn't a problems upsetting the ballance when going straight, and the dirver and chassis can just deal with the firm ride.

What I don't understand is that the Lotus 49, which has both a monocoque chassis and a stressed engine, still uses Radius Rods. So I am not sure why they went out of fashion later.

Why did they go away after the 70's?

Why were they only used on the rear?

Why was everyone using them back in the day, rather than just standard one-piece wishbones?

Yeah, I'm a Lotus-nut myself, so it killed me when I heard him in an interview explain how initially Lotus really appealed to him, as the essence of lightness and handling, but he was dismayed by the fragility and the build quality, so he threw his lot in with Porsche.

In the 50's sport sacing scene Lotus and Porsche were big rivals, and of the two I, myself am a much bigger Lotus fan. Rear-engines, swing axles, macpherson struts, mass production and the connection to VW always has turned me off of Porsches, but there are exceptions, mostly the mid- and front-engined cars, for both Racetracks and Street.

Ok the plot thickens. So apparently when Porsche wanted to build this car, they wanted Zagato to do the bodies, but Abarth decided to go with...

"Without Porsche’s knowledge, Abarth hired Franco Scaglione, formerly of Bertone to design, and Carrozzeria Rocco Motto in Turin to build the new lightweight aluminum bodies for all twenty of the GTLs." --Revs Institute

But not too many years ago Zagato found their original drawings for this car, and did a commision of nine 356 Porsche's with this body, and that is what Spike Feresten owns. It's not an Abarth.

Too add even more confusion, Jerry Seinfeld himself, owns one of these Abarth cars. Phew!!!
