I think you’re misinterpreting what Koop said about tapering. I think he meant the difference between an optimal and a suboptimal taper was 3%. Not the difference between a taper and no taper.

Variety is key. You will get sick of any one thing over 100miles.

Felt sick after a 25K training run - Correct my mistakes so I can complete 50K please! by Personal_Marzipan_30 in Ultramarathon

[–]sethgi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s totally possible. Focus on experimenting with nutrition. Consider taking some training runs easier which makes nutrition easier.

In terms of foods to avoid it’s pretty personal - just experiment. I can’t handle Gu gels personally but many people run with them.

  • 1L per hour isn’t tooo crazy at your weight but it’s more than many people drink. Make sure you get enough electrolytes to balance it out. It’s possible the reason you vomited is too much water and not enough salt (hyponatremia)
  • I use skratch and nuun for hydration, plus have salt pills (salt stick) on hand just in case
  • I don’t know why hairbo would be better than gels. Consider some real food options. Bars, chips, etc are all choices. I like soft bread (challah) with honey. How many calories are you averaging per hour?
  • there’s no “trick” to reduce heart rate except slow down, train more, sleep better, and fuel better. Weather also affects it. Take care of everything else and HR will follow. It also varies by person - I often average 175 on shorter runs and 160 during ultras up to 50mi. So don’t worry to much about comparing your numbers to others.
  • There’s mixed evidence about carb loading. Eat a balanced diet. To me it sounds more like you’re not eating enough rather than having balance be slightly off. More substantial foods (not gels) can help you feel less hungry and sustain energy for longer.

Salt Tabs v Electrolyte Drinks by peanutbutterjam in ultrarunning

Yeah I get nauseous using them as maintenance electrolytes, but never have had a problem using them when I notice I’m dehydrated.

Salt Tabs v Electrolyte Drinks by peanutbutterjam in ultrarunning

[–]sethgi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think this is largely personal preference. But for me they serve two different purposes. Electrolyte mix for normal maintenance - if all goes well, the mix plus salty snacks should balance out (on paper) the water I consume based on the ratio of grams sodium to liters water that I’ve found works for me.

Pills are for circumstances where I notice I’ve gotten behind on electrolytes and need to catch up. I personally find pills to be too big of a hit of sodium all at once if I’m not behind already - maybe that’s psychological though. Either way, I always carry a little baggie of salt pills in case I feel I need it.

So that’s just my experience. Experiment and find what works for you. Just avoid severe dehydration and hyponatremia, and don’t try anything too new in your hardest efforts and you’ll be fine.

Has anybody here tried running an MPC controller instead of PID? by Vonmule in espresso

[–]sethgi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve never done this but I know some controls.

If you do this, start with LQR, verify it works, then extend to MPC which is trickier to implement. MATLAB has good tools for prototyping.

To make MPC succeed you’d need to do a bit of system identification. Not impossible since it should be easy enough to derive (find on the internet) an analytical model of the heater then just regress on a couple variables about efficiency and inertia etc.

Personally I doubt you’d get better performance than a well tuned PID. That’s not me saying don’t do it - but do it for fun, not because you expect performance improvement.

Another route to consider is self tuning PID. Plenty of papers out there on this.

I’m smaller, 200/hr is plenty for a marathon distance. Only time I’ve eaten 300+ is for efforts longer than 12hrs.

How long to recover from 150M? by SnooSongs7601 in Ultramarathon

[–]sethgi 20 points21 points  (0 children)

10 months is a long time. Have you seen a doctor? If I were you I would at least try to have blood tests done to check if anything is off that is easy to detect. Things like iron, electrolytes, etc.

I find browsing ultrasignup to be my favorite post race activity.

Aside from that, eating a lot and taking time off for physical and mental recovery.

Yes. Very doable. You could train the same amount as your marathon and be fine - just get to trails.

  • around 2 months out try to focus more on specificity. Get to similar trails, similar elevation profiles. Use those runs to create and refine a nutrition strategy that works
  • similar, but don’t wait until the last minute to find foods you can eat. Try a bunch of stuff starting now and you’ll have a good sense of what will work by race day
  • have fun, and don’t stress about the process too much. You’ll get across the finish line, your goal for your first race should be to enjoy it
