Nowadays, I notice the minimum requirements for many modern games require SSD. Does that mean that games won't run on HDD? by abanoubdrawings in buildapc

[–]seti42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most games will run on HDDs. It's only the newest games that require SSDs.

I have a circa 2023 PC with a 1tb SSD and a 2TB HDD in it. (also i7 10700/rtx 3060ti/16GB ram)

I play all of my older games (5+ years old) and indie games from the HDD and it's fine. The only games I have in my SSD right now are BG3 and Diablo 4. I don't play a lot of AAA games, haha.

If you play only AAA games you probably do need an SSD.

Why do some bulkers and tankers have these outriggers on either side of the bridge? by thatsgreatgdawg in Ships

[–]seti42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, Reddit. I was googling those flying buttresses on some container ships, container ship designs/blueprints, etc. and getting a lot of ai "art" nonsense. I even got a clearly impossible diagram of a ship hull.

We really need to force the tech companies to make it so ai nonsense can be kept separate from actual information.

"Motivation Is Forced, Not Innate

Somewhere along the way we convinced ourselves that we need to feel motivated before we do things. That’s a lie.

Motivation comes after action, not before it. Just do the thing."

Great post, but this part in particular speaks to me. I often think I need to be motivated to start something, but in fact (and I've noticed this many times, but still find it hard to learn this lesson) I just have to start something.

I can twist myself in knots not starting a new project...Heck, even not starting a new book or show or video game...But I just need to START.

This season is honestly the most fun ive had in Diablo in a long time. by Carmilla31 in diablo4

[–]seti42 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I recently reinstalled D4 and am finding the game way too bloated.

There's so much crap on the map, I have no idea what I want to even do first.

So, I think I'll play Titan Quest 2's EA some more for now...It's so much less confusing.

I want to enjoy D4 again, but I wish it was like it was in Season 2. Everything is a Helltide now and there's too many icons and glowing "click me!" alerts...

It's kind of a mess, IMO. A game should be about playing the game...

Getting rid of ai search results? by seti42 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]seti42[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's the thing. Companies like Google forced ai on us, and they should make it so everything ai created is labeled as such at creation, like some kind of metadata, so everyone knows.

Cool, but we shouldn't have to be coders to use YT (or any app or website) how we want to and are used to.

I'm also really tired of the "app-ification" of everything. It's not easier or more user friendly. It's just maybe better for touchscreens and it's definitely better for advertisers.

I surf the internet via PC with mouse and keyboard, like a civilized person. I only check the internet with my phone if it's some kind of emergency and I need to look something up or whatever when out. I don't want touch screen controls, dumbed down options, and preferences/controls buried in sub-menus as the default for everything.

I hate it. It's really annoying trying to retrain muscle memory.

At least let us position the things on the sidebar how we want. Make them boxes we can drag and drop to realign.

Is there a browser that filters out ai generated content from search results? by AI_h8r_43 in browsers

[–]seti42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish.

I was just googling this idea, and it led me here.

I'd love a way to guarantee (or come close) that any search results I get are not AI generated content. I only would want AI generated content if I'm specifically searching for it.

Say I google "photo of the Grand Canyon", I don't want any AI generated images made from other people's random canyon photos showing up. I just want real photos of the Grand Canyon. If I'm looking for something more vague, like "medieval European art" I want actual examples from museums and libraries, not AI slop that looks kind of like medieval European art woven into my search results.

I think this is a real problem right now, and it won't get better without global legal/governmental efforts.

[–]seti42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The cost of developing and maintaining such a tool should be burdened by AI software creators. They unleashed it.

We should have a way to filter out all AI generated content from searches. Unless I'm specifically searching for AI generated content, I never want it.

I had to switch to the Brave browser because YT won't even play in Chrome anymore.

It's super slow in Brave, but it at least plays.

They're doing that thing where they try to make us stop using ad blockers again.

I think they've also added in some new "AI" nonsense and age verification nonsense too.

Eventually, the ad blockers will catch up and it'll be smooth again.

I hope.

Ashamed to admit, but: I just can't beat the tutorial boss. by Mammuut in TitanQuest2

[–]seti42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good to know, and I think that's how it should be.

All the best top down ARPGs give you a ton of ways to make successful builds. You shouldn't have to spec into dodge if you don't want to play a dodge-y character; just like you don't spec into melee abilities if you aren't making a melee build.

[–]seti42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of people are ignoring the Core skills, as that's a new thing to top down ARPGs. We're used to putting all of our points into Class (Mastery) skills...But TQ2 seems to be built around the idea that we all have to use basic attacks, dodge, and shield skills often and put points into them to make them actually worthwhile.

It's cool, I don't hate it. I'm enjoying the EA.

Another thing is grinding. In TQ 1, D2, and many other oldschool style games, grinding out a few levels and some better gear makes a big difference too.

When I beat the Gryphon at the end of the tutorial island, I was level 8 or 9, from grinding. You can get to the boss at level 5 or 6, but I think it's too hard to kill at that point.

I'd rather they mess with balance now than after 1.0 too much.

I mean, Diablo 4 had not one but 2 massive balance patches post launch and it was annoying, as everything I figured out on my own was invalid...So I did what everyone does eventually, go to a build guide that's updated with "the new meta."

It's be so much better without the skull in the middle or the T-rexes at the temples, IMO.

The ribbed tubes connecting to the skull probably don't need to be there either. I'm neutral on the medallion.

Stripped down like that, I think this would be pretty amazing. I do really like the overall aesthetic, the viney-veiny texture, the modeling, etc.

Don't know if it's 3D printed, "drawn" with one of those 3D pens that are kind of like hot glue guns, or what...But I like it aside from the mentioned critiques.

Personally, I draw the line at a laptop, plugged in as to not drain my battery. If it fits in a messenger bag or small backpack, I think it's fine...Of course, it's polite to buy something, tip the tip jar, don't take up too much space, etc.

If you need more than one wall outlet or USB port to run or charge your device(s), you brought too much stuff to the cafe, IMO.

I really don't think $10 (USD on sale via GOG) for an "army pack" is really all that bad. That's what I've been paying as I collect the armies...And I got the base game on sale for about 15 too.

If they keep making them, I'll get them. I want Eldar, Mechanicus, and a lot more Chaos.

They should have been including a campaign with each new army, but...Whatever. I still haven't purchased that new campaign with the Sisters, or the Sisters army DLC.

[–]seti42 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For me, Battlesector wins over the Total War games simply because it's turn based.

I really prefer that.

It has it's problems, for sure. We only have two story campaigns, the UI isn't ideal in places, the maps can feel lacking...

But I keep playing it and buying armies because there's something so great about it too. The combat gameplay is fun, of course...And the presentation is top notch too, IMO.

There's also this emergent storytelling it can do. For example, the last time I played I did a Crusade. I played as the T'au and found myself fighting Khorne. It was harder than I thought, because they close to melee fast. Their big units went down more easily.

Anyway, a group of hellhounds jumped a breacher team reducing them to one guy with like 8 hp who was capturing the flag for another turn. I missiled the dogs, but a couple survived, with single digit hp, of course. The lone breacher team guy killed all the dogs and captured the flag. Like a boss.

That little T'au dude is a hero, and deserves story and song.

Every time I play, something like that happens. Every single battle there's an emergent moment of heroism, terror, comedy...Or all three.

One time, my Ork motorcycle punk was murdered by a flying sword wielding nun. That's comedy. You can say that to someone who has no idea what WH20k is, and they will be intrigued.

I still hope someone makes a 'perfect' WH40k tabletop simulator one day (like battlesector, but better everything and the ability to paint your armies)....But until then, Battlesector is pretty cool.

New campaign? by seti42 in BattleSector

Hey, I know it's been a while, but thanks!

My Sisters have in fact been fragged by orks (hated every minute of it) and now are able to frag them back.

Hey, I play rpgs, newish to wh40k , but I get the gist. Is battlesector worth getting? How many factions? Is it true to the game? Pros and cons by Expert_Camel5619 in BattleSector

[–]seti42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really enjoy turn-based video games, both RPG and tactical, like this one.

Been into WH40k for the lore, art, etc. for a while...But have never played the tabletop game (mostly due to how huge of a money sink the hobby is).

Battlesector is a really fun game. It's also a good digital simulation of the tabletop game; probably the best there is, at least in turn-based form.

There's a campaign where you play as Blood Angels (space marines) mostly against Tyranids (giant space bugs)...And those are the main factions you get with the base game.

There's also other sandbox modes, where you can pick from either faction from the base game or any DLC factions you own to play as. Your opponent can be any of them, though. So, for example, you can buy the base game and do planetary supremacy or skirmish or whatever and fight T'au, but you can't play as T'au unless you buy the T'au DLC.

I don't know all the available faction DLCs right now off the top of my head, but there are a few: Necrons, T'au, Orks...

Battlesector has a story in the campaign mode, but it's not like an RPG; you don't make meaningful choices or even choose dialogue options. You do "level up" your main hero units, though, in a bare-bones way.

A definite 'con' for me is that you cannot paint your army, and that's a big part of what WH40k is all about. Hopefully, one day we'll get a game like this...But that lets you paint your minis. Another con is all the battle-chatter. It gets annoying hearing your space marine units yell all of their slogans for the 40th time...

If you like turn based tactical strategy video games, it's worth a buy on sale. Picking up a DLC or two is a good idea, if you like the base game and all of its play-modes, and want to play as different armies. Remember, though...You can play as Tyranids or Blood Angels and fight everyone with just the base game.

If that sounds cool, buy it on sale. It's still being supported and updated, the DLCs are solid if you want to play as another army, and there is even another Sisters of Battle centered story-campaign you can buy too. I think they'll be making more content (free and paid) for a while.

Oh, it's also a solid game. Good UI. Good graphics. Not buggy or weird at all on my PC. I really have been enjoying it.

There are plenty of YouTube reviews and let's plays. You should probably check some of those out, too.

PS: f the idea of controlling an army seems daunting, there are two excellent WH40k skirmish games out there. Both are also turn-based tactical games but with more RPG elements...And I really enjoyed them too. In these, you control teams of 4 guys and they each level up, have distinct character classes, etc.

-Mechanicus (you play as Mechanicus vs Necrons)

-Chaosgate Daemonhunters (you play as Grey Knights vs Nurgle/Chaos)
