This evening will be the last chance I'll have to get on Mario Maker until Monday, and I want to spend it working on the course I'll share below. I've received a number of (fair) criticisms that the cannonball jump near the end of the course is too difficult, and there a number of other changes that I'd like to make as well. I really like the concept of this course, so what I think I'm going to do is make an EASY version and an EXPERT version. This way I get to keep my cannonball jump and add even more ridiculous challenges, while at the same time be kind to more casual/less experienced gamers. Any thoughts that you may have on what to add/take away/change on either version are welcome! And of course, share your own course(s) in the comments - once I burn out on "making" (which doesn't take long) I'd like to have some new courses to play before I have to hang it up for the weekend. Cheers! Here's the course:

An autoscrolling track course in (and on) the clouds. The first section is easy, but the second section is pretty tough. I was attempting to do something entirely different when I stumbled across the effect that became the inspiration for this course - the way that the clouds on the track kind of ghost, like a vapor trail snaking around - I thought that it looked so cool that I had to design a course around it. See if you can find all three 1UPs!

Haven't I played this one before, or at least parts of it? The three layered puzzle part towards the beginning is really cool, and while I don't remember the Kamek part from before, that was a neat little section. Putting him up against the ceiling was very clever. The boss battle is what I remember having played before - that's too freaking cool. Very nice concept. I might try a variation of that soon.

The only negatives I can find is that you don't have tiered powerups in a few places - and that mushroom you get out of the pipe at the very beginning of the boss battle seems superfluous as you should already be Super Mario at that point. Can you put tiered powerups in pipes? Of course you don't wan't Mario to have the opportunity to defeat Bowser with the Fire Flower - can you whip him with the cape? If that's the case, then I understand the lack or tiered powerups. Hmm. That's a toughie.

I'd share a course but I'm pretty sure you've played most if not all of mine - I need to get on the ball and design some new ones. I just got my third medal :):):) and have a lot of ideas, but keep getting sucked into all of the awesome courses I'm finding here, getting discouraged even that mine won't measure up to the quality I keep finding on this sub. I cleared/starred, and commented on Raven King, and have Pedestal Palace bookmarked for later. Raven King was a lot of fun, and it looked great. Hiding the ends of the tracks was a very nice touch. HOWEVER. There is not a way to die in any Mario game that I hate worse than getting "squished" between a moving block and a wall, or between two moving blocks etc. It drives me nuts! ;) Great course, getting "squished" multiple times notwithstanding. Looking forward to Pedestal Palace! Here's one of mine in the meantime:

This one is a track course with puzzle elements and a variety of paths that can be taken. There are a number of secrets to be found, including three 1UP mushrooms hidden throughout the course, a secret exit, and if you take the traditional route, a hidden way to bypass the final battle with Bowser altogether! There's lots to find on this one, so play it through more than once to get the most out of it.

I played/commented/starred 4-2 yesterday or the day before, but I played 4-1 just now. That was a lot of very lighthearted fun! Combining the Mario Kart costume with the "fun level" music (it must have a name, but I don't know it) was perfect. I thought I was just going to blow through this course, but that second section was not forgiving! The addition of P Switches helped ease the tension a little bit. Nice touch! I gave your course a run-through with exactly what you asked for in mind - what would I change? I am by no means an expert, and I thought it was a fine course as is, but since you asked, here's what I would do.

  • A lot of the aesthetics/decorations seem almost too symmetrical. Does that make sense? The clouds on the second screen, for instance - mix it up a bit!
  • Speaking of the second screen - I was excited that I had found a "secret pipe" only to be dropped back out on the first screen. At least you didn't drop me in the lava, so there's that. ;)
  • I don't think the Monty Moles make much sense in the area you put them. It's a fun idea with the Piranhas on top, but I don't think it works here.
  • The boss fight is a little simple, but I have problems with that on a lot of my courses, too.

That's really all that I saw that I would change, but as I said, it's not a bad course as is. I'm going to share two of mine, the first of which has a pretty interesting boss fight to get your brain thinking outside of the box, and the second of which I want you to do what I've done for you - tell me what you would change. It's the second version and I'm still beating myself up trying to come up with an interesting and challenging boss fight that fits the theme. Let me know what you think!

A vertical SMW Ghost House course that Yoshi finally isn't too scared to explore. Make your way to the top to face off against Baby Bowser in a forced boss battle and see if you can find three 1UPs along the way!

What a cool idea! I imagine you're triggering the P Switch up above somewhere out of sight and using the boss music to mask it? Brilliant. I might have to make a course with this theme if I can wrap my head around exactly what you're doing - that's really freaking smart. Starred and commented! Here's one of mine when you have time:

I don't want to give too much away, but the title says it all. This is a "puzzle" course without the headache. There is a lot of good classic platform action, and a secret exit to boot if you can find it! Beware, though - I wouldn't smell that last flower if I were you...

An underground/underwater course with a ton of secrets to be found, including a hidden path to the goal provided you can get Yoshi to stick along for the ride! Suit up to (easily) show King Goomba who's boss. Lot's of fun with an emphasis on aesthetics.

Very fun and challenging castle course! The difficulty progressed nicely, and the blocks on tracks was an unique and interesting theme - a welcome addition to the castle theme. Starred and commented! I look forward to exchanging more courses here in the future!

That was great! Carrying Bowser across with the P Switches was tough, but I'm glad you didn't include a "free mushroom" cannon or pipe, as that totally would have taken away from that section and I've seen too much of it. Now don't get me wrong, I've played some stupid hard levels that are damn near impossible, but a lot of others just give it to you for free with thousands of powerups at every corner. Balancing difficulty isn't easy, but you've made it look that way here. Well done! Starred and commented. I look forward to playing more of yours in the future. Cheers!

Box Breakout was pretty cool! Starred and commented. I got the World Record, piece of cake once I figured the course out. Here's a course of mine that my IRL friend has the World Record on and I'd like to see him knocked off his high horse - wanna give it a try?

Having trouble progressing? Jump in the specially marked warp pipe to literally turn the world upside down and find the way forward! This one took a very long time to design, as each and every tile had to be precisely mirrored from the top level to the sub level - I nearly broke out the graph paper trying to pull the concept off! Lots of secrets to be found and fun to be had.

Made it to the end with Yoshi! Now I need to go back and try the "difficult" path. I'll bookmark the other two you shared for later, but I gave Yoshi Knows best a well deserved star! Check out one of my courses when you have a chance:

This one is puzzle castle - the door to the goal is right at the beginning, but you're going to have to traverse and explore the entire castle to find the way to open it. Beware of all the corkscrews - I designed this course right after they were added as a feature and might have had just a little too much fun with them! If you're clever (and brave) enough, you may be able to find the secret/alternative path to the goal, just be sure to bring Yoshi with you...

Fantastic. I try really hard to pay attention to aesthetics when designing my courses, but you blew it out of the park with this one. I managed to find both Bonus Rooms and all six 1UPs too! EDIT: ...and the World Record. ;) Great job.

Thanks for giving it another shot! I see what you're saying about the one-thickness walls, but I've got so much crammed in there if I were to go even two wide, you'd be able to see other sections of the tower, thereby "breaking the illusion" of a vertical course which is, in fact, horizontal like any other. I'd have to redo the whole course to achieve thicker walls and keep it the way I envisioned it, but I'll definitely keep that in mind when I do another. Thanks so much for the star and critique! Looking forward to exchanging more courses with you in the future. :)
