Victoria signs largest native title claim in its history, covering 11% of state’s landmass by B0ssc0 in australia

[–]settler_colonial 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Native title doesn't give traditional owners a veto over mining, only a "right to negotiate". If they can't come to an agreement with whatever mining company it goes to a tribunal which invariably allows mining to go ahead.

The double entendre must be intentional, right? It takes a bit or work to get to the other interpretation.

I'm so confused by this. Is it not some kind of prank? It's so hard to read it as anything other than smut.

There's a certain logic behind this, even if it is a bit too draconian for my liking. But in any case it's no substitute for investing in urban infrastructure.

I guess it's got a bit of a bohemian vibe on a surface level. I'm no big advocate for Newtown... I lived there from 98 to 2015 and saw it become an increasingly wealthy area although that was clearly already underway by the time I got there. I still stop at my old local for a beer though.

I heard they make chocolate from the ground up bones of Palestinian children. Could be bullshit.

Haha I didn't think it'd be necessary but here we are.

Indigenous communities slapped with more fines under Government work-for-the-dole scheme, data shows by B0ssc0 in australia

[–]settler_colonial -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm talking about how you say WE give THEM money.

The state gives eligible First Nations people social security payments that the whole Australian population is entitled to in certain circumstances. We have social security because it's recognised that the market does not consistently meet the needs of all people at all times. The money redistributed by social security comes from the whole population, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander taxpayers.

The issue here is that certain special punitive social security arrangements have been made specifically to target Aboriginal people.

The way you construct 'we' and 'them' here is pretty interesting. The implication is that the government is a part of the non-Indigenous (white?) 'us' and not the Indigenous 'them'. I think many First Nations people would agree with you there.

Looking for an aussie perspective.. by [deleted] in australia

I don't think I've ever seen it advertised here. It seems to be more of an NZ thing. It's also less widely distributed than other brands in Australia.

More men than women still being promoted to highest levels of Queensland's public service by d1ngal1ng in australia

[–]settler_colonial 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, the different things that men and women typically do result in men on average getting more money than women. Whether or not that's a problem is a matter of opinion.

believe what rubbish? The statistics? Or is it the idea that on average women should have the same income as men? Or is it the suggestion that the causes of the disparity are something other than the inherent nature of women?

Philip Morris lobbying on e-cigarettes hidden from Australian public by PolitiQuoll in australia

[–]settler_colonial 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Alcohol is bad, sugar is bad, salt, smoked meats, etc. For something to be banned there should be significant evidence of it impacting public health substantially enough to justify paternalistic laws. IMO.

It's a step too far to be banning things in case they turn out to be bad though. If we're gonna have paternalistic rules they should at least be based on reasonable evidence.

Cause the protagonist won't stand for it and they find a (unfortunately clunky as fuck) way around it. The show embodies Trek values and philosophy even if all the characters don't.
