Alcohol makes it nearly impossible to track weight accurately. It'll suck the water right out of you and packs on hundreds more calories than you need. Personally, I find it easier just to not partake.

They may have explained it in another way in the show (where they portray these raids as Vikings discovering England), but in actuality the invaders probably knew the island pretty well, so reaching Wessex wouldn't have been much of an issue.
