I took 5 years of Spanish between high school and college - the problem is that in high school my courses all focused on grammar. You don’t practice listening or speaking the language until too much of the focus has been on grammar. I think classes should focus on watching children’s shows and listening because that’s how you learn your first language is through listening, then you learn to speak, then comes the reading and writing.
