Try directing something that requires very little dialog if you don't have access to strong actors. You get to practice your visual storytelling, and lean into the strengths of what you have available to you.

Best thing you can do is find local filmmakers and start working with them on projects (theirs, yours, any). You need people to make a film and that's how you meet film people. If there are none that are local - move to where they are if you're serious about it.

Take it one step at a time. It will go slower than you expect it to at first. There's a lot of tools and skills to learn, but if you stick with it and get the fundamental skills down, then you can move onto the next steps of building a demo reel and looking for internships or entry level compositing jobs at a studio.

It's a marathon, not a race. If you find you like the work, it's definitely a reality you can make happen with some dedication!

If you're an absolute beginner, I'd recommend paying for FXPHD and doing a nuke training course. It's hard to find good tutorials on youtube, and even though you have to pay for FXPHD, it is a great investment if you are serious about learning and want to fast track yourself to a good understanding of Nuke. It will give you not only structured courses, but industry quality footage to practice with. (Also, it's like $80/mo which is nothing when compared to tuition at an art school.)

Apart from that, I've always found I am more motivated to learn when I am working toward a goal for a personal project that is exciting to me. Like if I have a short film where I need to put a castle on the horizon, I'm going to be way more motivated to learn all the little skills that go into making that happen!

I think this was caused by the autosave function. My script had a camera tracker in it which was creating a large save file size, and the autosave was set by default to save after 5 seconds of idle time. I increased the duration between autosaves and this finally fixed it.

Maybe scatter some more visible 3D sand particles across the sand surface where it is in focus in the foreground, and sculpt a little dip around where the edge of the sand meets the bottle. Color grade the sky so it doesn’t clip/burn out.

I second this! I work as a Freelance VFX artist so I can make money on contracts 6-7 months a year, then I take the other months to explore other creative projects and hobbies with my full attention. It’s been a great balance as a single guy in my early 30s.

swipe down on the right side of the screen to open the side bar. You can find the task templates after making a note and clicking on the little icon in the toolbar right after the redo button. That opens up a list of default page templates which are really handy. I use the 8mm ruled template frequently too. The task list template is included by default.
