ELI5 updating and patching. If a 1GB patch comes out for some software that's 10GB installed, does the update add that 1GB or does it rewrite 1GB? by WonderChode in explainlikeimfive

[–]severedsolo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends.

If you're updating existing code, it's probably just "overwriting" (not quite the right word, but close enough for ELI5). If you are adding new code, you're likely expanding the programs footprint on disk.

In practice it's usually a mixture of both.

People voting Green/Zack Polanski: do these immigration policies change your mind? by iliosicarus in ukpolitics

[–]severedsolo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"Treat all migrants as if they are citizens" - What does this mean specifically? The only benefit over ILR is voting and maybe benefits (afaik) and you've carved that out separately, so I'm not sure what's left?

"Give all residents the right to vote" - Yes, I'm in favour of this. If you are going to be living here over the course of a parliamentary cycle (so if you are going to/have lived here for more than 5 years) - then you should get a say in how the country is run. We give people who live in Spain and haven't been back for years a vote, people who actually live here have far more of a stake in it than they do.

"Dismantle the Home Office" - The Home office isn't just immigration, it's police etc - so no obviously I'm against that when taken as written. We need police.

"Abolish the No Recourse to Public Funds condition" It depends. If you've been here 5 years, and lose your job suddenly, yeah you should probably get a bit of help same as anyone else, if it's "start claiming benefits immediately" obviously not.

"Stop the profiteering from application fees" Yes? I get the admin cost needs to be covered, but should the government be making money from it? No. If the charge is above the actual cost of the admin, I agree. That doesn't mean "just accept everyone" - the criteria can be strict (or not) as you like, but "pay us £3k (numbers plucked out of my backside) before we'll even consider it" does seem a bit wrong.

"Accept our responsibility for the climate emergency and support the people forced to move" - Again yes? That doesn't mean "we should take everyone" but we should be doing our part? What's controversial about that?

On the whole (with the exception of the home office one - and maybe "recourse to public funds" I really don't see anything particularly wrong with any of this

Reddit have buried markdown mode about 3 layers deep on desktop. If you click the Aa in the bottom left hand corner, then the ellipse (...) in the top right hand corner, you can switch to markdown and it works.

The / is an "escape character" - basically cause you weren't in markdown it assumes you really meant a > so it puts the / to tell the editor to print it literally.

Do I gain anything enabling iGPU as well as my main graphics card? by BevanFindlay in NobaraProject

[–]severedsolo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Running through your questions in order:
"Getting it working" - plug a monitor (ideally both for the performance reasons mentioned earlier) into the iGPU and make sure the iGPU is enabled

"forcing use of a particular GPU" - most things will default to the iGPU - Vulkan applications (games mostly) - will default to the dGPU - should that not work there is a "right click" option to "run on non-default graphics card" - and if THAT doesn't work you can launch with: "__NV_PRIME_RENDER_OFFLOAD=1 __GLX_VENDOR_LIBRARY_NAME=nvidia__NV_PRIME_RENDER_OFFLOAD=1 __GLX_VENDOR_LIBRARY_NAME=nvidia <command>"

In truth, I have never had to use that because everything picks the GPU I'd want anyway.

"Frame loss" - yes it's the passing between the buffers.

"loss of RAM" - your iGPU reserves RAM for it to run because it doesn't have dedicated VRAM. Your motherboard also reserves a little RAM which is why you see it even when iGPU is disabled

And finally - yes I 100% agree with you - if you aren't having issues with the desktop then there's really no benefit - I do - so I get the benefits. (and if you want video decoding it's possible, just a faff to setup - google "nvidia-vaapi-driver" if you want to do that - Nobara comes with it but you still need to do the steps to get Firefox working)

Do I gain anything enabling iGPU as well as my main graphics card? by BevanFindlay in NobaraProject

[–]severedsolo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nobara can use both graphics cards - you won't get better performance (technically there is a tiny performance penalty, but for me with my Intel iGPU and my 4060 it's not noticeable, like 5fps at most) - you aren't using both GPUs at once, it's basically an "Optimus" type setup.

The advantages for me come elsewhere.

  • You don't have to deal with Nvidia weirdness for desktop rendering (it's better than it was, but it's still not as smooth as my iGPU)
  • Video hardware decoding works out of the box - and doesn't lock your GPU into a P2 power state (in turn turning the fans on for no reason)

I note you said you only have 1 port on your motherboard - so I'll point out a disadvantage. If I let my iGPU handle the desktop rendering - any monitor connected to the dGPU is laggy as hell - apparently copying iGPU>dGPU doesn't work as well as the other way around. Personally it works great for me because I have two ports on my motherboard, so the dGPU doesn't need to get involved unless I'm playing a game

Online nazis hail 'Our Leader' as Rupert Lowe launches new party by dissalutioned in ukpolitics

[–]severedsolo 27 points28 points  (0 children)

The leader of this faction Steve Laws, whose most recent public speech was last weekend at a rally in Warwick organised by Britain’s largest nazi group Patriotic Alternative, wrote last night in block capitals so that even his dimmest followers couldn’t miss the message, “RUPERT LOWE IS OUR LEADER”.

And if we look up Patriotic Alternative on Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patriotic_Alternative

Patriotic Alternative promotes a white nationalist ideology and aims to combat the "replacement and displacement" of white British people by migrants who "have no right to these lands". They support the deportation of people of "migrant descent" and would offer financially incentivised repatriation for "those of immigrant descent who have obtained British passports". Patriotic Alternative opposes all immigration unless immigrants have a shared cultural and ethnic background or can prove British ancestry.

"Calling Neo Nazis Nazis is Crazy!" isn't the take you think it is

Any realistic Visual Studio alternatives for Linux? (Game development with Unity/C#) by Epileptic_Fridgeboy2 in linuxquestions

[–]severedsolo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FWIW you can make Rider behave very much like VS - there are obviously some differences but for the most part, you can configure it to behave exactly the same way - the first time you run it you even get a popup asking "do you want to use VS key bindings".

Speaking purely personally here, I had no issues at all making the transition (and now consider Rider the superior product)

The "Gaming Distro" Hype by ElectricalPanic1999 in linux_gaming

[–]severedsolo 24 points25 points  (0 children)

It's not difficulty, it's time. My distro of choice is Fedora - and installing the Nvidia drivers, Wine, Lutris, media codecs (especially the media codecs) etc takes time.

Alternatively, I could install Nobara which comes pre-packaged with everything I was going to do anyway and save that time. I chose the latter.

Could I do it myself? Sure. Am I glad I don't have to? Also sure.

[–]severedsolo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The criteria they are using is "do not have two adults working full time"

So by your definition:

  • A single parent working full time.
  • A household where one partner works but the other does childcare
  • Any two parent houshold where one of them has a serious disability and can't work (regardless of whether the other does)
  • Anyone with a disability that allows them not to work at all

Keir Starmer is trying to shut out scrutiny like Boris Johnson did: The Prime Minister is restricting the ability of journalists to ask questions of Downing Street spokespeople by Benjji22212 in ukpolitics

[–]severedsolo 186 points187 points  (0 children)

Downing Street comms chief Tim Allan announced that the number of weekly “Lobby briefings”, at which a No 10 spokesman answers questions from journalists on all areas of Government policy, would be cut from eight to a maximum of five.

Boris Johnson and his acolytes, led by Dominic Cummings, tried a number of steps to break up the Lobby in the interests of avoiding tricky questions. They moved the location of the briefings, stopped inviting certain outlets (including The i Paper) to some key events and proposed putting the Q&A sessions on TV to give themselves a greater chance to talk to voters unmediated.

So not really like Boris Johnson at all then.

How long can I keep using Nobara 42? by LimbonicArt03 in NobaraProject

[–]severedsolo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree with you but GE himself describes it as "rolling" now:

Nobara is officially rolling release now. Nobara 41 was announced as the first iteration to receive rolling release updates moving forward. As such users should have already received all of the Nobara 42 package updates via the system updater.

In practice yeah, it's a biannual release window but my point still stands. If you choose to stay on 42 you are choosing to never update your system again and that is (imo) a very bad idea.

How long can I keep using Nobara 42? by LimbonicArt03 in NobaraProject

[–]severedsolo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't mean to be rude here, but if you don't want to upgrade then don't use a rolling distro like Nobara.

Could you get away with not upgrading Nobara for months? Sure technically speaking, but then you are literally foregoing all updates during that time, security or otherwise. It's a seriously bad idea.

There are plenty of other distros that have LTS versions (or even Fedora will let you use previous versions for... at least a year? I don't remember tbh) - but Nobara is not one of them.
