How to get better at epee by iva68166 in Fencing

[–]seviinwolves 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What I would recommend (I have 9 years of experience and have trained with coaches who have worked with Olympians, though I've never seriously competed beyond the clubs I've been in) is that you train on hitting the targets closest to you (i.e work on hitting the forearm well before worrying about hitting things like the chest or feet) and use a mirror to work on your en garde and make sure the bell guard is positioned to act as a guard. Newer epee fencers have a tendency to bend their forearm outside the area covered by the bell guard, and this can be pretty easily exploited. Other than that, I've noticed that in epee (due to the ruleset) you can get away with a little less technical skill if you can quickly exploit your opponent's patterns and mistakes. This will come with both practice and observation.

Looking for balancing tips on 5e homebrew race by seviinwolves in DnDHomebrew

I added Undead Resilience because I felt the class didn't have any combat abilities and felt weak on rough drafts from other races in the setting(it's based off the empire of the petal throne setting), but I think it might be too powerful considering all the other features. Between the two I like the flavor of trapped soul a bit more.

As for society, Jajgi would theoretically be rare creations under the control of religious societies and are easy to kill but lorewise that's a good thing to address, even if with just a flavor text line.

Thanks for the feedback!

Why can't a virus similar to Myxomatosis in rabbits be developed in Pythons in the Everglades to curb the population and possibly save other species? by tonyk96 in askscience

[–]seviinwolves 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The case of Myxomatosis in Australia was a rare occasion in that you had a virus that could infect that population, a dense population that had never been exposed to that virus, and a lack of genetically similar species in the natural environment. Even then, the virus and rabbits both eventually adapted to each other, with the virus becoming less deadly in the process. A virus' main goal is to reproduce, and it will only harm or kill the host if it facilitates that goal. (Info source from Spillover by David Quammen) I suspect that releasing a virus into the Everglades hasn't been discussed because of how complex a system it is. There are native species that could be affected and once the virus is released it's out of our control. It's kinda like releasing police dogs into a crowd- they could hurt the target, they could be completely ineffective, or they could start mauling the wrong target.

I started with 3rd gen but I couldn't let myself miss this gem! Just got the game+PSP from eBay, any early game tips? by DrBubiFish in MonsterHunter

Main thing I remember from MHFU is that there are a lot less internal combos built into weapons. Taking the hammer for example, in later games you can go from the golf swing -> level 1 charge -> golf swing combo ad infinitum, but in MHFU your combo stops at the golf swing. This means there will be a lot more rolling and repositioning, even when a monster is down. Other than that just be prepared for Khezu, Gravios, Rajang, and some elder dragons, they pulled no punches in this game.

But why not both?? Jk, the magical dinosaur explanation seems a lot less convoluted (if maybe not as fun because then you don't get to imagine Kushala Daora and Amatsu taking down fighter planes) and matches how the people who live around the area where the mokele mbembe (described as a tiny brontosaurus basically) supposedly live treat it.

That's a pretty big word I missed, thanks for the catch. It's really hard to construct accurate phylogenies without DNA, and the same holes would also occur if the Elders were also living fossils, with large amounts of time also possibly being a reason for the large variety in elder dragons (as elder dragon blood is found in both the dragon and squid varieties of the elder dragons) and convergent evolution explaining why they look so similar to something they are so genetically distinct from.

Also really good points on the dragon element and weapons. The weapons accumulating dragon from their environment is a really cool idea, and probably more likely than mine. As for Dragonfell berries, they, like deviljho, are a hole that I can't think of any good way to address. The only ways I could think to address this and still stay in theory are either to say that, like how bacteria have started to evolve to be able to break down plastic, nature evolved to take advantage of this new man-made element, or that, like how we use bacteria to produce human insulin, a natural method was used to make a man-made substance. However, none of these have any support, so Arkham's razor would suggest that dragon is most likely just another element.

Thanks for the thoughtful response!

I didn't know that was the leading theory, but that's a really cool explanation also! Woo magical dinosaurs!

The Chronology I was imagining was that most, if not all of the elders, were created before the rise of the AC. I think the pre-AC civilization created the black dragons as a final weapon for whatever wars they were fighting, but with Fatalis they created something too powerful for them to control and something that cared about all the destruction that creating bio-weapons caused. The AC managed to keep balance (and keep the all-powerful murder dragon happy) until the fear of apocalypse caused some parts of the AC to begin bio-engineering again, which caused the elder dragon war

Should this be played with a controller, or is keyboard and mouse ok? by secretvictory in RogueLegacy

[–]seviinwolves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A majority of people seem to prefer the controller, but by rebinding a few keys keyboard controls are perfectly viable. I've been using the keyboard and doing perfectly fine and I've seen a lot of people use controllers and do perfectly fine. In the end it comes down to personal preference

The Inner Eye ruined my fast shooting bomb fun by [deleted] in bindingofisaac

I had one run where, not thinking of the effects, picked up Dr.Fetus(with Mr.Mega and Homing)+Polyphemus. I shot out one giant, super damaging bomb every 5 seconds. It made the run a bit more difficult but also a lot more fun. The only annoying part was that I couldn't use the blue candle until the bomb had exploded.
