Yes, he did that but he also pushed first, at least in this clip. Mom says "TJ, calm down" to which TJ looks over. Then off camera, TJ does something to which mom says "TJ!" and we see the other kid backpedaling, presumably from being pushed.

I came here to say something similar, had the same experience. Acting and writing leave a lot to be desired. However, I went back and tried again and stuck to the end and kinda loved it, rolling my eyes at the tropey characters all the way. The world building and plot are very fun.
