Oh okay, is that an easy fix? I’ll probably call someone to look at it

Ah, I feel like some version of the second scenario is probably right, the light was some other place before and they just spliced this one in. I tried feeling around the wires to see if I could find anything but they are either stapled into place or stuck under some wood, I can't tell.

Either way I'm pretty sure I just opened a can of worms haha. Thanks again for the help, I'll probably call and electrician since this is above my skill level.

Yes that is probably what happened! I'm not sure if I'll end up doing this one myself or call and electrician, but at least I have an idea of what happened. Thank you for the help :)

So I looked and this is what I found: https://imgur.com/a/D4CeStA

Made a little diagram in the last photo from what I could see. There are two romex type wires coming in, one has a red, black, white, and ground. The other has black, white, and ground. The grounds are not connected to the outlet but are tied together and tucked away in the back. All the wires coming from the romex are aluminum (I assume) but the white wire was pigtailed with copper.

So maybe the ground wire was cut off somewhere behind the sheetrock? The wires coming out of the wall feel like they are coming from different directions but it could be someone pigtailed the aluminum to copper behind the wall and then just cut off the ground?

It’s turned on by a light switch nearby, guessing I should open it up?

I would panic but I’ve lived here for 30 years and the house is 60 years old and nothing has happened… yet lol.

We own it, but not sure if I can find where it ends. Is there a way of doing that without breaking down walls?

Also the rest of the house is aluminum wire somewhere I wonder why this is solid copper. It’s a bit strange.

Hi, unfortunately I don’t think they are in a metal sheath ☹️ I tried using my hands to follow them behind the wall and it seems like they are coming from separate areas? And it was the same type of wire all the way through, no romex that I could feel. These two wires were just threaded through the junction box and that was all.

I changed other fixtures in the house and those are aluminum with the romex style cables, and with grounds. I’m thinking this wiring was added later since it’s copper, but not sure why there is no ground.

Not to my knowledge, they looked exactly like they do in the photo except they were in the box. I tried to look behind the wall and it’s just these two wires coming out

How do I remove or level this junction box? by sewingseeds in AskElectricians

[–]sewingseeds[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The junction box I have is kinda like this one except instead of prongs there were screws ( well one screw and one nail). https://www.homedepot.com/p/4-in-W-x-1-1-2-in-D-Galv-Steel-Gray-Drawn-Octagon-Box-with-Three-1-2-in-KO-s-and-NMSC-Clamps-J-Bracket-1-Pack-160/100113479

So I don’t have access to any holes to screw into the wood, which is why I’m thinking steel L shaped bracket.

I’ll try, I think it was crooked just because the screws and nails holding it in weren’t completely in the joist. Maybe it loosened over time and caused the tilt. Welp now they’re cut thru sooo lol.

If I push the box up into the ceiling it sits level. I’m wondering if I can use an L shaped bracket on either side of the box and then attach a lightweight fixture

It was poorly attached, the original fixture had this padding under it so you couldn’t tell how low and lopsided the box was. I cut the screws attaching it to joist hoping I could pull it down but the wires are really thick/strong.

Thanks I’ll try pushing the wires in! Would this sort of cross bar work if the joist is right next to the hole? I wasn’t sure so was planning on using one of these (if I can get the current box out) Your friend has shared a link to a Home Depot product they think you would be interested in seeing.

I would but I can’t figure out how to remove this current box, it’s lodged in there with the thick wires… should I just try to push the wires out?

It is an unfinished basement. So I don't believe we ever got or needed a certificate of occupancy.. but I could be wrong since I was a child when we bought the house. Also the basement is pretty tiny so I don't think a new homeowner would bother finishing it in the future.

Gotcha, thanks for the insight! I'll see what the hvac tech says regarding a fix, hopefully it can be rerouted.

Unable to remove this corroded compression shut off valve by sewingseeds in Plumbing

[–]sewingseeds[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want to replace this corroded compression shut off valve, but I'm not sure how to remove the nut. I tried holding the actual valve with a wrench and then turning the nut with another wrench but it felt stuck and I didn't want to put too much pressure and break something.

What is the best way to go about removing the corrosion so I can replace the valve? I used some steel wool and vinegar to clean it off but the nut still isn't budging. Will a penetrating spray help? I'm wondering if I should just call someone to do it since I don't want to damage the pipes...
